32 - 6.5 release didn't compile on most older perls due to
33 a logic error enabling experimental 5.24 code for all versions.
34 - since various broken or deficient patches float around
35 to work around the vtbl API breakage in perl, let's provide
36 our own workaround, which seems to be much less invasive
37 and more compatible than the approaches seen so far. YMMV.
38 - work around assertion failure in perl_destruct on 5.24
