<H2><A name="1.1.0">What is <em>Crossfire</em> ? </a></h2> |
11 |
|
12 |
In the words of its original author Frank Tore Johansen :<P> |
13 |
``<em>Crossfire</em> is a multi-player graphical arcade and adventure game |
14 |
made for the X Windows systems environment. It has certain flavours from |
15 |
other games, especially <em>gauntlet</em> and the rogue-like games (mainly |
16 |
<emhack , moria , angband,</em> and <emragnarok</em> ). Any number of |
17 |
players can move around in their own window, finding and using items and |
18 |
battling monsters. They can choose to cooperate or compete in the same |
19 |
<em>world</em>.'' <P> |
20 |
|
21 |
In the years of development that have followed, <em>Crossfire</em> has grown to |
22 |
encompass over 150 monsters, ~3000 maps to explore, an elaborate |
23 |
magic system, over 15 character types, a system of skills, and |
24 |
many, many artifacts and treasures. <p> |
25 |
|
26 |
<em>Crossfire</em> is freely distributed under the GNU license and the code may be |
27 |
obtained from a number of FTP sites ( |
28 |
<a href="#1.3.0">Obtaining crossfire</a>). |
29 |
<b>Take note:</b> you will need at least an ANSI C compiler (i.e. <em>gcc</em>) |
30 |
and UNIX to build the game. <em> X Windows are necessary to play.</em> |
31 |
A screen shot of the <em>Crossfire</em> display appears below<p> |

<em>Crossfire</em> is currently being maintained by Mark Wedel |
38 |
(<samp>mwedel@pyramid.com</samp>) and is awaiting the ``great leap forward'' |
39 |
to a true client-server status (Look for version 1.0+). Not to fear, |
40 |
<em>Crossfire</em> is certainly playable in its present form! But the game |
41 |
is in flux and new releases of <em>Crossfire</em> occur on a quasi-monthly |
42 |
schedule. You may want to subscribe to the announcement mailing list (see |
43 |
section <A href="#1.2.0"> mailing lists</a>) to get notified of updates.<p> |

<h2><A name="1.1.1">1.1.1. What is included in this document?</h2> |
46 |
|
47 |
This document is a guide intended to focus on the game-play aspects of |
48 |
<em>Crossfire</em>. |
49 |
The original intention of this text was to |
50 |
help aspiring players create and play a character and more quickly initiate |
51 |
them into the intricacies of <em>Crossfire</em> . But, as things went along, many of the |
52 |
older docs began to be incorporated and lots of good reference material |
53 |
slipped in; this document may also be a good resource for more experienced |
54 |
players.<p> |
55 |
|
56 |
Having said all of that, lets point out that each release contains a fair |
57 |
amount of documentation and the <em>Crossfire</em> Player's Handbook is |
58 |
definitely not the last word! Certainly, every player will want to obtain |
59 |
the <A href="../spoiler-html/spoiler.html">spoiler</a>, and while this may |
60 |
sound flippant, its still true\emdash a good place to start tracking down |
61 |
much of the information you may want is the README document in the top |
62 |
directory of your release.<p> |
63 |

<h2><A name="1.1.2">1.1.2 Getting started: beginning players</h2> |
66 |
|
67 |
First-time players may want to skim over sections |
68 |
<a href="chap2.html#2.1.0">character attributes</a>, |
69 |
<a href="chap2.html#2.2.0">generating a character</a>, |
70 |
<a href="chap3.html#3.1.0">Basics</a>, and |
71 |
<a href="chap7.html#7.1.0">Beginning players</a> before playing the game. Don't be daunted by the apparent |
72 |
complexity of <em>Crossfire</em> - in reality <em>Crossfire</em> is quite |
73 |
easy to play and character generation is simple. Later on, when you have |
74 |
some experience playing the game, you may wish to go back and re-read |
75 |
skimmed material and expand your knowledge of the unread sections. <p> |
76 |
|
77 |
If you just want to damn the torpedoes and ``roll'' up a character quickly |
78 |
then proceed to section <a href="chap2.html#2.2.0">generating a character</a>, |
79 |
in this text. You may <em>still</em> find section <a href="chap7.html#7.1.0">Beginning players</a> helpful |
80 |
reading. <p> |

<h2><A name="1.2.0"><em>Crossfire</em> Mailing Lists</h2> |
84 |
|
85 |
Two mailing-lists exist; the first is for discussing bugs and development |
86 |
while the second is for just announcing new versions. If you want to join |
87 |
or leave any of the lists, send mail to |
88 |
<samp>crossfire-request@ifi.uio.no</samp> with the subject |
89 |
``<samp>subscribe</samp>'', ``<samp>unsubscribe</samp>'',``<samp>subscribe |
90 |
announce</samp>'' or ``<samp>unsubscribe announce</samp>''. If you use the |
91 |
subject ``<samp>subscribe</samp>'' or ``<samp>unsubscribe</samp>'' you will |
92 |
(un)subscribe to <em>both</em> lists.<p> |
93 |
|
94 |
To send messages directly to the list, mail <Samp>crossfire@ifi.uio.no</samp>. |
95 |
While the development/bug list is not supposed to be used for helping |
96 |
players solve problems, sometimes a knowledgeable reader of the |
97 |
list can be tempted into answering your question.<p> |
98 |
|
99 |
An archive of old messages can be found at <samp>ftp.ifi.uio.no</samp> in the |
100 |
directory <samp>/pub/crossfire/archive</samp>. |

<h2><a name="1.4.0">Document Credits</h2> |

|
120 |
B.T. provided the bulk of the written material; K.E. and |
121 |
(to a lesser extent) J.K provided expert editing and typesetting advice. |
122 |
The <em>Crossfire</em> Player's Handbook uses material borrowed from older documentation written |
123 |
by the following people (in rough order of borrowing magnitude):<p> |
124 |
|
125 |
Sam Mackrill (lots of bits from the old FAQ)<br> |
