Comparing rxvt-unicode/Changes (file contents):
Revision 1.168 by root, Sat Aug 14 03:00:32 2004 UTC vs.
Revision 1.428 by root, Tue Oct 25 20:04:58 2005 UTC

1Lines marked with "xterm:" indicate either xterm features ported to rxvt 1TODO: harmonize --dsiable-options into position-dependent options.
2or changed rxvt behaviour to make it more compatible to xterm (usually 2TODO: after requesting the selection and getting a timeout, no further requests will be sent.
3xfree86's xterm). 3TODO: do font request caching, might help rxvtd on some machines
4TODO: safer command: keymap processing.
5TODO: "slow" rendering mode for bidi and scripts
6TODO: read property sequence is broken with respect to utf-8 etc.
7TODO: http://www120.pair.com/mccarthy/nextstep/intro.htmld/Workspace.html is the correct nextstep look.
8WISH: /usr/share/doc/libdisplaymigration0-dev/spec.txt
9WISH: keymap modification via esc-sequences.
10WISH: line-rewrapping on resize
11WISH: searchable backlog
12WISH: meta-tagging of data by regex/master process (my dream project)
13WISH: OnTheSpot editing, or maybe switch to miiiiiiif
14WISH: tabbed windows (hey, just use screen...)
15WISH: just for fun, do shade and tint with XRender.
4 16
5TODO: implement xterm keymap option, for full TERM=xterm compliance. 175.8 Tue Oct 25 22:03:57 CEST 2005
6TODO: multibyte support for setwmname et al. 18 - INCOMPATIBLE CHANGE: many configure options are now on by default.
7TODO: there are other todo items, but they are not in this file. 19 If you want the old behaviour, try:
8TODO: tabbed windows 20 configure --disable-everything <your enable options>
21 - INCOMPATIBLE CHANGE: -fade changed it's meaning to comply with
22 the documentation and common sense: when upgrading, replace your
23 percentage by 100-percentage.
24 - integrated "fade to specific colour" patch by Martin Parm.
25 - slow down the internal visual bell (delay by 20ms) and update
26 the terminfo flash code to use the same delay. This is
27 synchronous, so many bells might inhibit screen updates in other
28 windows.
29 - text with background==foreground colour gets displayed with default
30 bg/fg now when in reverse video, so it can be seen when selecting.
31 - allow koi8r* as x11 encoding name for koi8r (Nikita Danilov).
32 - removed undocumented inheritPixmapforce option.
33
345.7 Wed Jul 13 04:46:33 CEST 2005
35 - implement some useful (hopefully) options for rxvtd.
36 - separate and improved rxvtc(1) and rxvtd(1) manpages.
37 - fix a bug that caused segfaults on startup on systems that do
38 not support local unix connections, e.g cygwin. (btw, I didn't
39 even know about the -rootless and -multiwindow Cygwin/X modes).
40 - large amounts of text without control sequences or newlines
41 could almost freeze output. This has been fixed by adding extra
42 refreshes in these cases (also a problem in oriignal rxvt).
43
445.6 Sun Jun 26 22:11:13 CEST 2005
45 - R_SB_RXVT bitset value was 0, so rxvt scrollbar was initialised
46 every time resulting in display errors (original rxvt also affected).
47 Reported by Jasmin Buchert.
48 - font names are now considered to be utf-8 encoded (xft apperently
49 uses this convention. X Core fonts might not, but it should be rare).
50 Affects display in iso14755 box.
51 - rewrote the low-level xft drawing function ("xft backend" for the
52 hipper parts of the world) to hopefully cope better with proportional
53 chars mixed with fixed-width ones.
54 - rxvt is now much more careful (read: slower) with potentially
55 overlapping xft characters. It usually overshoots and redraws
56 more than required, but that's better than undershooting and
57 cutting pieces off of characters.
58 - rxvt is now more restrictive in what font heights it accepts for
59 fonts that will likely overshoot or undershoot lines.
60 - fix a cosmetic problem with the unfocused cursor on a wide character
61 at the end of the line (reported by Mikachu).
62 - wide characters not fitting into the end of the line will be
63 output in the next line (reported by Mikachu).
64 - added doc/solaris9.patch by Ewgenij Starostin.
65
665.5 Sat Apr 23 22:31:36 CEST 2005
67 - re-enabled modifer state matching as in 5.3, but implement
68 a new builtin: keysym style that simply reverts to the built-in
69 meaning of the given key.
70 - use scrollcolor for next scrollbar instead of hardcoded antiquewhite
71 (patch by Martin Edlman).
72
735.4 Mon Apr 18 00:33:31 CEST 2005
74 - match modifier state exactly in custom keyboard code.
75 this is necessary because it has no knowledge about
76 built-in mappings and so will overwrite them. the priority-code
77 will be re-enabled when this has changed, so watch out.
78 - cursor blinking now depends on frills.
79 - underline cursor mode (frills, -uc).
80 - implement special value (*g*) for pointerBlankDelay
81 to disble it.
82
835.3 Sun Mar 13 00:20:44 CET 2005
84 - fix a bug that allowed to overflow a buffer via a long
85 escape sequence, which is probably exploitable (fix by
86 Rob Holland / Yoann Vandoorselaere / Gentoo Audit Team).
87 - Custom key mappings no longer confuse mouse buttons
88 with modifiers.
89 - use XmbSetWMProperties instead of XSetWMProperties.
90 - properly update WM_LOCALE.
91 - implement _NET_WM_PING protocol.
92 - implemented escape sequences to move the scrollback buffer view
93 and clear the scrollback buffer.
94
955.2 Sun Feb 20 01:48:59 CET 2005
96 - new option -pty-fd that makes the terminal a slave
97 that uses an existing pty for I/O instead of starting
98 a command.
99 - implement enough of XEMBED to allow for correct focus.
100 - added doc/embed-tk, an embedding example in Perl/Tk,
101 and doc/rxvt-tabbed, a primitive tabbed shell implemented
102 in Perl/Gtk2.
103 - fix assertion failure ("crash") on mousewheel-scrolling
104 when the terminal height is small, by removing the assert.
105 (reported by Mikael Magnusson).
106 - SYNCCVS. backported bugfixes done to rxvt
107 (sourceforge bugs #1028739, #1028732), except for
108 pts/%s fix as it seems to collide with freebsd,
109 and sourceforge bug #954654, which is not neccessary.
110 - change terminfo file to not clobber G1 when using
111 line-drawing characters, as this seems to mess
112 with EUC-JP (it will clobber G0, but G0 practically
113 needs to be US-ASCII all the time).
114 - toggle default application keypad/cursor mode to help
115 some apps who fail to set the correct mode.
116 - check for WM_PROTOCOLS type in ClientMessage as to
117 not destroy the window for other types of messages.
118 - remove shared library (or any library) support - it is
119 of no use currently (and -embed is a better way to embed
120 rxvt-unicode).
121 - get rid of the intpro files.
122
1235.1 Tue Feb 15 17:13:27 CET 2005
124 - fix a bug when parsing fontnames and another one
125 for empty keymaps which could result in crashes
126 (Kuang-che Wu).
127 - new option: -embed (frills). somebody could write a simple
128 tk script to make a tab'able terminal now...
129 - only warn on X errors and _try_ to continue (frills).
130 - add COPYING back, which got lost somehow.
131 - after deciding that LSM is dead, remove all traces of it,
132 along with other, similar, cleanups.
133 - _try_ to react sensibly to some non-monotonic time changes.
134 - don't crash in urxvtc when getcwd fails (reported by Paco-Paco).
135 - tweak font searching algorithm a bit to be faster and more
136 compatible with older rxvt-unicode versions when multiple fonts
137 match (reported by Paco-Paco).
138 - urxvtd tries to stay in "/" whenever possible.
139
1405.0 Fri Feb 11 18:31:48 CET 2005
141 - document a race-free hack to start urxvtd.
142 - document all(?) environment variables used and set by rxvt.
143 - bring xgetdefault-style resource file ordering more in line with
144 Xt, and document it in rxvt(1).
145 - correctly use screen-dependent resources when --enable-xgetdefault,
146 and also fix some memory bugs (thanks to Thierry Reding for
147 his patience and time in tracking this down).
148 - bring own resource parsing more in line with X resource parsing,
149 most notably, don't remove double quotes.
150 - compile fix for freebsd (no ut_id) (Thierry Thomas).
151 - clean up utmp and pty on X I/O errors and signals (idea
152 by Joël Riou).
153 - "un"document -xrm, it never really worked, was only
154 available with --enable-xgetdefault, is not necessary
155 and is surprisingly hard to implement.
156 - shaved off some code segment size.
157 - various code cleanups.
158 - more keysym-mapping fixes.
159
1604.9 Thu Feb 3 09:52:03 CET 2005
161 - nuke out utmp entries completely. Should be fixed in
162 original rxvt, too. (reported by James Michael Fultz).
163 - resizes wil now correctly refresh the displayed text when
164 -pixmap is active.
165 - new option/resource imFont.
166 - document --tripleclickwords/-tcw.
167 - select logical instead of physical lines when doing a triple-click.
168 - reordered help listing to group similar options together.
169 - handle SIGINT the same way as SIGTERM (reported by Joël Riou).
170 - fix a bug introduced while applying the keyboard patch
171 (WU Fengguang).
172 - document all window-op sequences (rxvt.7.) and more keysym
173 examples (rxvt.1).
174 - removed src/test completely.
175 - renamed keysym 'proto:'-prefix to 'command:'.
176
1774.8 Tue Jan 18 02:23:57 CET 2005
178 - added a patch by WU Fengguang that makes the keyboard
179 highly configurable (e.g. locale changes, custom escape
180 sequences, and more). See keysym resource in rxvt(1).
181 - remove default key sequence for unknown keys again, as this
182 can be achieved by customizing the keyboard now.
183 - fix some freeing problems when destroying the rxvt_display,
184 resulting in segfaults.
185 - don't crash when the saved cursor position doesn't fit on the
186 screen (wrong assert in original rxvt, reported by ikaro).
187 - fix signed/unsigned bugs on wc<->mb conversions.
188 - reset slipwheel scrolling speed when reaching the top or bottom
189 (Mikael Magnusson).
190 - for core fonts, use ascent + descent when a font is loaded,
191 and PIXEL_SIZE when not. when loading a font, iterate until a
192 font has been found that _really_ fits the height (reported and
193 tested by Olivier Wittenberg).
194 - set IUTF8 input flag, when defined (linux-2.6.5+).
195 - only define _XOPEN_SOURCE on solaris.
196 - autogenerate src/* dependency list.
197 - fixed linespace option, which ought to work now (and is dependent
198 on frills, not on it's own configure option).
199 - include pty.h, if available (cygwin).
200 - removed W11 directory from dist, it wasn't used anyway.
201 - initialize the locale much earlier.
202 - fixed two tiny per-instance memory leaks.
203
2044.7 Wed Dec 29 20:54:24 CET 2004
205 - fix a bug in the event logic that could cause the temrinal to be
206 black on initial startup.
207 - do NOT call XCloseIM, ever. This causes way to many crashes due to
208 races in the protocol and within Xlib.
209 - map iso-left-tab to the same sequence as shift-tab.
210 - generate a unique escape sequence for many unknown keys, such as
211 additional multimedia keys.
212 - mask out high (non-unicode) bits on wide characters, to cope with
213 implementations that store tag info in the high bits.
214
2154.6 Thu Dec 16 07:54:23 CET 2004
216 - try very hard not to exhaust the kernel tty buffers, even
217 if it slows down large pastes and is only cosmetic.
218 - streamline atom and xft color allocation to reduce startup
219 time (12.8s -> 7.8s on my dsl). Still, doing it with only 2-3
220 turnarounds would be much faster, but impossible to implement(?).
221 - implement underlineColor resource when ENABLE_FRILLS.
222 - iom left it's signal pipe handle open in the child
223 process. Fortunately not security-relevant as the pipe data gets
224 ignored.
225 - do not use XSETROOTPMAP_ID anymore, support ESETROOT_PMAP_ID
226 instead.
227 - fix a crash in rxvtd when the last window was being closed
228 (reported by hednod).
229 - fix an unlikely memory leak.
230 - fix atom name enumeration.
231
2324.5 Mon Dec 13 07:47:16 CET 2004
233 - fix an extremely nasty bug in utf8-conversion. upgrade is advised.
234 - completely re-wrote selection pasting. This should fix garbled
235 incomplete characters at 32k boundaries and too-short INCR
236 selections, and more. Increases memory requirements considerably
237 for large selections, but that seems unavoidable.
238
2394.4 Sun Dec 12 22:10:06 CET 2004
240 - rewrote handling of default-char width.
241 - implement _NET_WM_NAME et al., and also use UTF8_STRING
242 for the xterm property esc. sequence. Allows i18n window
243 titles etc.
244 - SMART_WINDOW_TITLE removed, pls. complain if you need this.
245 - added GBK encoding (formidable patch by WU Fengguang).
246 - fixed a bug in the transparency code.
247 - upgraded iom.[Ch].
248 - force slower (but more responsive) transparency update.
249 - fix off-by-one bug with wide characters at the end of a line,
250 which got partially overwritten by spaces.
251 - as xlib is completely broken with respect to utf-8 handling
252 and nobody is going to fix it, that part has been re-implemented.
253 should fix most paste problems between apps that use UTF8 encoding
254 and rxvt running in a lesser-supported locale (thanks to Robin Redeker
255 for writing utf8towcs). Only enabled with ENABLE_FRILLS.
256 - darwin compile fix by Ethan Blanton.
257 - fix the colour of the underline, which was rather random before.
258
2594.3 Sat Dec 4 04:58:37 CET 2004
260 - unapply the "emulated graphical chars. respect wcwidth" patch.
261 obviously in locales not having these characters they should
262 still have a width. Solve it correctly by not relying on wcwidth.
263 Note to self: do not ever apply patches without checking them
264 thoroughly.
265 - updated .spec file, it's included in the release tarball
266 now, too.
267
2684.2 Wed Dec 1 03:30:22 CET 2004
269 - make emulated graphical characters respect wcwidth (Kuang-che Wu).
270 - remove debugging code that caused major slowdowns
271 on high-latency networks.
272 - wide characters shift the correct number of characters
273 in insert mode now. Reported by Gunnar Ritter.
274 - doc/rxvt-unicode.spec file contributed by Ville Herva.
275 - make storage of tab movements as characters optional
276 on the -ptab option and pastableTabs: resource. On request
277 by Gunnar Ritter.
278 - fix a bug where :size= argument for xft fonts was ignored
279 or used incorrectly. Reported by Ville Herva.
280
2814.1 Sun Nov 21 21:10:19 CET 2004
282 - save and restore cursor position in secondary screen regardless of
283 -ssc/-ssr settings.
284 - fix some 64-bit bugs that lead to crashes with certain other
285 programs like vncviewer (original rxvt also affected).
286 - added doc/podtbl to the dist tarball.
287 - add compile fix for darwin.
288 - configure fix for transparency without tinting.
289 - changed CN to ZH _really_ everywhere.
290 - upgraded iom.[Ch].
291
2924.0 Mon Sep 13 01:10:26 CEST 2004
293 - turn off autohinting for some badly-hinted fallback fonts.
294 - mnaapge tpyo crorcetoins by Bastian Kleineidam.
295 - implemented rectangular selections (button+meta), experimental.
296 - implement race-free signal handling in iom.C.
297 - use iom.C signal handling to avoid races in signal handling.
298 - use default action on SIGINT and SIGQUIT, instead of terminating.
299 - "the return of the 100 times per second refresh bug".
300 ... terminated by a fix.
301 - new supported preeeditType "None".
302 - added FAQ about possible compose key problems.
303 - changed CN to ZH everywhere (sorry for the confusion).
304 - move XFilterEvent up, as some input method seem to want events
305 for windows not requesting XIM. Please report if this change
306 causes any harm (specially with pointerblanking)
307 (patch by Kuang-che Wu).
308 - send the input method spot position on every refresh, not just
309 when rxvt thinks it should (which was not often enough...).
310 - fix double-wide combining characters (it might look a bit ugly,
311 though, but common cases are handled by normalization anyways).
312 - moved FAQ to rxvt(7), also made a copy into README.FAQ.
313 - fix a bug(?) in the XIM destroy callback.
314 - be more conservative when trying to register new input methods,
315 as Xlib races might make rxvt crash. When two or more
316 input methods are active, killing one probably still crashes rxvt
317 due to that bug :( Thanks a lot to Kuang-che Wu for immense help
318 in tracking this down.
319 - manpages (but not .txt and .html versions) will be patched (during
320 make install) with the correct program name and other info.
321
3223.9 Wed Aug 25 19:24:04 CEST 2004
323 - the change to unsigned int from unsigned short broke
324 many signed comparisons, resulting in failed assertions.
325
3263.8 Wed Aug 25 05:46:56 CEST 2004
327 - WARNING: TERM=rxvt-unicode is now *default* unless compiled
328 differently. A terminfo entry will automatically be compiled and
329 installed if tic is available.
330 - fixed some --disable switches that didn't work.
331 - tweaked src/features.h a bit.
332 - removed README.unicode.
333 - support select&paste of tab characters.
334 - fixed a segfault when trying to load nonexistant fonts (reported
335 by Eduard Bloch and Mikael Magnusson).
336 - fixed a long-standing rxvt bug in which rxvt failed to save
337 and restore the correct cursor position on the secondary screen.
338 - reworked rxvt-unicode terminfo to allow more efficient and less flickering
339 screen updates with curses.
340 - wide characters that are being halfway overwritten are now replaced
341 by spaces.
342 - urxvtc now transmits urxvt as default name, not urxvtc anymore
343 (likewise for other names chosen at configure time).
344 - disabled the automatic font lookup for unknown characters. xft
345 is just too slow for this to work.
346 - changed realbold code, implemented _real_ bold and italic support,
347 where _real_ means the symbiosis of what I want with what I can
348 implement. use --enable-styles.
349 - removed 256 color mode, but enable 88 colours in all modes
350 (88 to be compatible with 88 colour xterm which is widely
351 supported, and most programs assume a non-iso colourtable
352 for terminals with "odd" number of colours).
353 - added doc/etc/rxvt-unicode.terminfo which is a big overhaul
354 compared to the old rxvt terminfo.
355 - sped up xft rendering by 30% *iff* the font allows it (i.e. is
356 monospaced "enough") *and* matches the base font in width.
357 - implement positive and negative character-font caching, which
358 speeds up output immensely in case a character cannot be found
359 (only for non-bold right now).
360 - fix segfault in fading code on certain escape sequences.
361 - better default font size and style.
362 - rxvt-unicode is now much more picky about fonts not fitting
363 into the base font, but to offset this it will check each
364 single character against the base font extents and will only
365 use the characters fitting into the bounding box (+ some fudge).
366 - characters not fitting into the base boundary box will now often
367 be used anyways, but the following characters will be redrawn
368 more often to avoid pixel-droppings. This is like the original
369 rxvt pixel-dropping pass but it's much faster.
370 - scrollColor now affects plain scrollbar (Mikael Magnusson).
371 - fixed segfault in overlay code when height was larger than the
372 screen height.
373 - cursor no longer shines "through" the overlay.
374 - 7-bit ST marker detection was broken.
375 - scrollbar didn't come back sometimes when switching it
376 off/on using escape sequences (Mikael Magnusson).
377 - fix lots of colour problems with focus fading.
378 - $COLORFGBG was not set as documented.
379 - fix iso 14755 5.1 support when --enable-frills but --disable-iso14755.
380 - removed OSC 702.
381 - disabled MOUSE_REPORT_DOUBLECLICK by default, as programs seem to be
382 confused by it rather than using it.
383
3843.7 Tue Aug 17 04:22:25 CEST 2004
385 - new configure option --enable-iso14755.
386 - full iso 14755 conformance (at least I claim so :).
387 - extended the FAQ section in the manpage.
388 - fix OverTheSpot and OffTheSpot editing, which was broken since ages,
389 due to no fontset being available. The fontset used is a very rough
390 approximation to the rxvt font, though. This fixes the
391 "cannot create input context" in most cases.
392 - fix coordinates used for Over && OffTheSpot editing to fit directly
393 at the cursor (Over) or into the top line (Off).
394 - reset SIGHUP and SIGPIPE handlers to default values (they were
395 previously being ignored, causing programs not to exit on windoe
396 close).
397 - implemented simple overlays for feedback messages. believe it or
398 not, this was a major blocker in implementing tabbed terminals.
399 - fix compiling with --disable-frills (Adam Sampson).
400 - clarify bold docs in README.unicode (Adam Sampson).
401 - fix crash on window close when the input method or context
402 could not be created.
403 - add work around for badly written programs (see debian bug
404 #202497). This is _not_ a bug in rxvt but rather a race
405 condition in other programs (e.g. jed). It works by forcefully
406 sending SIGWINCH when rxvt sees the first output from the
407 command. This workaround isn't perfect (a slight cost to
408 wellbehaving programs who need to resize twice), but it usually
409 works.
410 - set correct pixel size in struct winsize.
411 - document more escape sequences.
412 - fix leftover macros and a few minor doc glitches in rxvt(1).
413 - work around bash's assumption that stepping into the middle of a
414 character is a sensible operation.
415 - fix some corner cases in autowrap handling.
416 - remove various useless make cruft, renamed files to better
417 reflect on their function, renamed many variables.
418 - fixed printscreen functionality, as noted by Jinesh Choksi.
419 - fix a problem where redraws of double-width characters sometimes
420 made the last character draw with normal width (especially visible
421 with selections).
