14WISH: http://www120.pair.com/mccarthy/nextstep/intro.htmld/Workspace.html is the correct nextstep look.
15DUMB: support tex fonts
16
177.7 Tue Feb 21 12:32:49 CET 2006
18 - use double-buffered drawing (xft fonts only). On many driver/hardware
19 combination this actually increases xft drawing speed, at the expense
20 of more network bandwidth and slight nausea on the side of the author.
21 - readline perl extension now requires shift-click instead of a normal
22 click, and eats the click.
23 - tabbed perl extension now supports -e.
24 - disabled graphics-exposures on the main drawing GC, report any
25 refresh bugs please.
26 - improve property handling for -pe tabbed: avoid unnecessary property
27 changes (for kde's benefit) at the expense of extra round-trips,
28 improve size hint setting.
29 - modified XIM according to a patch sent by Takano Akio that sets
30 the preedit rectangle for OverTheSpot, which helps some input methods
31 to correctly position their preedit window.
32 - un-optimise the line clearing on newly scrolled-in lines a bit: the
33 former reasoning was that any fg colour on default bg looks the same
34 in empts spaces, but thats not true when reversing (e.g. selection),
35 so also check for matching fg colours. This fixes the problem where
36 selecting newly scrolled-in lines would exhibit wrong colours.
37 - fix a bug in the perl interface causing focus in events to generate
38 focus out perl events, causing bad focus effects with -pe tabbed.
39 - fix a race resulting in a crash on exiting.
40 - fix a with --disable-xft that caused xfreecolors to be called on
41 colors never allocated, resulting in aborts (reported by Paco-Paco).
42 - resources on non-initial screens weren't refetched correctly
43 (reported by Paco-Paco).
44 - fix a bug in xcopyarea pass and _disable_ it, as it seems not to be
45 working in either rxvt-unicode nor in the original rxvt.
46 - removed undocumented -exec alias for the -e option.
47
487.6 Fri Feb 10 08:52:36 CET 2006
49 - changed interpretation of [alpha] colour prefix.
50 - +option now really sets the option to default, instead of using the
51 resource value.
52 - options that require an argument now really _require_ an argument.
53 - the tabbed extension now forwards focus and keys events to th
54 relevant tab window.
55 - tab colours are now configurable and have sensible defaults
56 (initial patch by hednod).
57 - option menu is extendable, readline, selection and
58 selection-autotransform can now be disabled/enabled at runtime.
59 - forcing a configure event to tabbed subwindows with -pe tabbed, for
60 the benefit of automove-background.
61 - the automove-background extension added a wrong constant offset.
62 - force refresh of XA_RESOURCE_STRING on virtual reconnect.
63 - return exit status 2 in urxvtc when urxvtd couldn't be contacted.
64 - the linux yield hack is back, now using usleep, and enabled only on
65 __linux__.
66 - further round trip eliminations in the !XFT case by remembering
67 the colour components.
68 - plain scrollbar works better with -sr.
69 - fixed half-shadow scrollbar look.
70 - more colour rtt optimisations.
71 - properly(?) free colours on window close.
72 - reorganised the FAQ into multiple sections.
73 - add ISO646.1991-IRV to the list of supported codesets.
74 - minor libptytty update.
75
767.5 Tue Jan 31 15:15:43 CET 2006
77 - further improvements to the careful mode detection, and font width
78 detection:
79 - fully double-wide fonts will now be correctly treated,
80 - overlap detection was improved.
81 - detect totally broken fonts (usually synthesized by xft).
82 - careful mode forced refresh sometimes clashed with blinking,
83 causing unnecessary screen redraws.
84 - better handling of XFT combining characters.
85 - enable antialiasing for some replacement fonts, as they
86 might get used for other encodings which really need it, later.
87 - remove spacing=100 from all default fonts, as this creates totally
88 weird spacing (5 times normal) with xft.
89 - removed iso10646 fallback, as xorgs iso10646 encoded fonts are mostly
90 broken.
91 - removed gnu unifont fallback, all combining characters are broken.
92 - replace named colours by xorg's rgb.txt equivalents, to
93 reduce round trip time on startup, and short-cut allocation
94 of rgb:rr/gg/bb for xft.
95 - short-cut allocation of rgb values in the xlib case
96 (patch by Paco-Paco).
97 - overhauled color management: smaller codesize, alpha support.
98 - support "rgba:rrrr/gggg/bbbb/aaaa" color specifications and
99 an "[alpha]" prefix.
100 - try to work around Xft and Xrender forcing everything to be 100%
101 transparent. Long Live Xft!
102 - do not include X11/Intrinsic.h anymore, directly use
103 Xlib/Xutil/Xresource directly.
104 - try to find a nearest matching color when color allocation fails
105 on a pseudocolor screen.
106 - SYNCCVS: compared to rxvt-cvs 2006-01-28, no relevant changes.
107 - fix version report (DA) (which was unfortunately broken).
108 - changed version number report again, now to emulate xterm closer.
109 - added the OSC sequence 702 to detect the urxvt version number.
110 - small configure updates.
111 - further RTT optimisations.
112
1137.4 Sat Jan 28 15:26:27 CET 2006
114 - screen background wasn't always erased properly when scrolling,
115 - re-enabled clearing optimisation disabled in 7.4pre.
116 - small configure updates for libptytty.
117 - fixed version options: line output.
118 - removed stoopid debugging message left in the code.
119
1207.3 Wed Jan 25 22:47:35 CET 2006
121 - don't let iso14755 or mouse reporting get into the way of perl
122 (could lead to global grabs never being cleared).
123 - experimental OnTheSpot editing support (-pe xim-onthespot).
124 - moved Shift-Button2 paste combination to Meta-Button2.
125 - the cutchars resource will now be respected and used by the
126 selection extension.
127 - added the "remote-clipboard" extension which just runs external
128 commands to fetch and store the selection data.
129 - added -depth switch that tries to get a different visual depth
130 than the default (replaces the old PREFER_24_BIT logic).
131 - removed (unused) arabic presentation form composing sequences.
132 - be more strict when deciding that a core font glyph is too wide and
133 needs the careful rendering mode.
134 - allow more leeway for italic fonts when deciding that a character is
135 too wide and needs careful mode.
136 - redraw even more characters around characters using careful mode.
137 - made selection-pastebin fully asynchronous.
138 - reduced number of server turnarounds at startup by allocating
139 atoms only once per display.
140 - renamed on_keyboard_command to on_user_command.
141 - changed version sos (ESC [ > c) response to be more compatible with
142 xterm.
143
1447.2 Sun Jan 22 21:58:16 CET 2006
145 - bugfix: urxvt (not urxvtd) did not correctly handle multiple
146 environments necessary, which resulted in segfaults within
147 getenv (reproducable: urxvt -fn 9x15, open a menu once,
148 ctrl-shift-672c).
149 - bugfix: the selection speedup in in 7.1 unfortunately caused
150 non-ascii characters to enlarge/move the selection.
151 - bugfix: resizing sometimes leaked lines from the secondary to
152 the primary screen.
153 - bugfix: reducing window size while large amounts of text were output
154 could lead to an assertion failure.
155 - added "tabbed" extension that provides a crude tabbed terminal.
156 - added "readline" extension that allows cursor positioning
157 via mouse clicks.
158 - now it is possible to insert the value of the CLIPBOARD selection
159 with shift - mouse button 2.
160 - fixed the automove-background extension to ignore coordinates
161 in non-synthetic events.
162 - created a separate libpty for portable and secure
163 pty/tty/utmp/wtmp/lastlog handling, and include it in rxvt-unicode.
164 - the non-terminfo visual bell now works asynchronously, so
165 continuous ASCI BELs in one terminal do no longer monopolise the
166 whole urxvt[d] process.
167 - support some *BSD makes (for the time being, gnu make is a safe bet).
168 - work around bugs in FreeBSD's gcc.
169 - implemented some *BSD fixes in configure.
170 - removed support for obsolete offix dnd protocol.
171
1727.1 Thu Jan 19 20:25:34 CET 2006
173 - setuid/setgid operation is now _encouraged_: security has been
174 improved by moving privileged operations into a separate process
175 and permanently dropping privileges within the terminal. This
176 makes it possible to remove security checks from the perl code
177 and gives a much safer feeling when urxvt needs to run with
178 special privileges.
179 - perl taint checking disabled, as urxvt no longer runs setuid/setgid
180 itself.
181 - new perl extension automove-background that can be used to get
182 the same effect as pseudo-transparency with any pixmap.
183 - new perl extension example: perl/selection-pastebin, can be used to
184 e.g. upload the selection to a webserver and generate a url, or
185 similar stuff.
186 - use the scrollback buffer even when the scroll region doesn't
187 span the whole screen, as long as it starts at row 0. Helps
188 for programs displaying a status line at the bottom.
189 - selection popup now shows selection in dec/hex/oct.
190 - perl/selection: matching on unicode characters in the selection
191 code was O(n²), which equals infinity in some degenerate cases
192 :-> Matching is now done on UTF-8, which makes it almost instant.
193 - perl/selection, perl/selection-autotransform: regexes are now
194 being interpreted in the locale urxvt was started.
195 - implemented override-redirect option and enabled it on menus,
196 as kwin puts our windows behind the terminal (what a shoddy wm).
197 - fixed struct utmp check in configure for OpenBSD.
198 - complete overhaul of the pty/utmp management stuff and configure
199 (Emanuele Giaquinta).
200 - add tsl/fsl and related capabilities to the terminfo description,
201 to set the window title.
202 - swap the environment in some more cases. This hopefully fixes
203 some segfaults that might be caused by xft asking for env variables
204 at the wrong time.
205 - removed src/strings.C and src/menubar.C. No menubar support
206 anymore.
207 - removed all traces of SMOOTH_REFRESH.
208 - nuked QNX support.
209 - made some fixes to xpm offset and scaling code.
210 - perl-overlays and refresh hooks were not applied in correct order.
211 - changed coordinate-system of view_start/nsaved to be top to bottom.
212 - iom extended to support listening for child exits.
213
2147.0 Fri Jan 13 14:02:18 CET 2006
215 - added sections for DISTRIBUTION MAINTAINERS and about
216 SETUID/SETGID to the FAQ.
217 - selection, searchable-scrollback, selection-popup and
218 option-popup extensions enabled by default.
219 - increased xft drawing speed for problematic fonts. The effect
220 will likely be small as 99% of the xft slowness is server-related.
221 - perl: much increased functionality, better overlays, popup support
222 and much much more.
223 - perl: urxvt::line now can set via ->t and ->r.
224 - perl: changed interpretation of --perl-ext-common and -pe.
225 - perl: finally implemented --perl-eval.
226 - perl: non-blocking anyevent support.
227 - perl: run tainted and ignore perl-eval/perl-lib if started
228 setuid/setgid.
229 - free the resource database: this plugs a massive memory leak. As a
230 side effect, it also gets rid of XGetDefault calls.
231 - free one of the cursors, fixes a small memory leak.
232 - built-in (as opposed to terminfos) visual bell was broken/too fast.
233 - applied minor cleanups by Ladislav Michnovic.
234 - applied pty handling cleanups and improvements (Emanuele Giaquinta).
235 - mark-urls launch-on-click by jepler.
236 - removed "small" resource parsing function, as it wasn't really
237 compatible, and not really small either.
238 - removed PATH_ENV and PATH file search support.
239 - removed support for locale-specific app-defaults file.
240 - fixed a bug where out-of-bounds colour sequences could lead
241 to crashes.
242 - limit colour changing to the standard 88 palette instead of all
243 colours.
244 - XTerm_Color01 sequence returned wrong results in query mode.
245 - iom.C now checks against destructed io_manager when unregistering.
246
2476.3 Wed Jan 4 22:37:10 CET 2006
248 - SECURITY FIX: on systems using openpty, permissions were
249 not correctly updated on the tty device and were left as
250 world-readable and world-writable (likely in original rxvt,
251 too), and were not restored properly. Affected are only
252 systems where non-unix ptys were used (such as most BSDs, not
253 GNU/Linux). (found, patched and debugged by Ryan Beasley).
254 - meta8 support was forcefully enabled in most configurations.
255 restored configurability of this (useless) feature (reported
256 by Mikachu).
257 - optionally embed a perl interpreter, which can be used for more
258 intelligent/customized selection support, visual feedback,
259 menus, tabs etc. See the the urxvtperl manpage, the -pe option,
260 perl*-resources and keysym resources. Not everything is there yet.
261 - try to be more clever about differing font sizes and their ascent.
262 Not guarenteed to work, but works better in most cases now.
263 - fix directory permissions on install.
264 - implemented option to disable built-in line drawing characters
265 and fall back to the font ones (patch by Martin Pohlack).
266 - disabled sched_yield support: the linux version is just too useless
267 (it schedules nice'd processes before the own one for extended
268 periods). Too bad, it could reduce system time by a factor of 5 here.
269
2706.2 Mon Jan 2 16:03:01 CET 2006
271 - implemented intensityStyles option which enables/disables bold/blink
272 selecting high intensity foreground/background colours, suggested by
273 Chuck Blake.
274 - move iso14755 character feedback box out of the way if it would
275 obscure the mouse cursor position.
276 - replaced callback.h by a fixed version from gvpe that correctly
277 returns the callback result (affects new -pty-fd semantics in urxvtc
278 on a few architectures). Reported by darix.
279 - include one trailing space in rectangular selections to indicate
280 the inserted newline (yeah, weird, but visually more pleasing).
281 - try to use sched_yield to (drastically) improve terminal data
282 transfer efficiency.
283 - further minor cleanups.
284
2856.1 Tue Dec 27 13:23:40 CET 2005
286 - update iso8859-7 table (euro and drachma round-trip et al.).
287 - fix a crash when the selection scrolls out of the scrollback
288 while the user still drags.
289 - selections that were partially scrolled out of the window were
290 not drawn correctly.
291 - lines newly scrolled in were not initialized properly, leading
292 to extremely long lines and (hopefully) some segfaults.
293 - iso14755 overlay position was wrong.
294 - iso14755 overlay now displays rendition info, too.
295 - use unicode white space class instead of hardcoded values for
296 stripping whitespace.
297 - do whitespace stripping on rectangular selections.
298 - slight cleanups in src/features.h.
299
3006.0 Sat Dec 24 13:58:56 CET 2005
301 - make it compile without SMART_RESIZE again.
302 - enable slow link support by default.
303 - fix relative cursor-positioning not respecting scrolling regions
304 (also a bug in original rxvt).
305 - initialize termios structure to zero when fetching it fails
306 (see http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=84647 for a
307 partial patch).
308 - bump max columns/rows to 10000 each.
309 - bump max savelines to 10000000.
310 - -pty-fd now passes the urxvtc fd to the urxvtd process.
311 - avoid linking against -lnsl/-lsocket/-lxpg4 unless neccessary.
312 - major code cleanup (still not complete, though).
313 - implement -hold option.
314 - _major_ rewrite of internal buffer handling:
315 - re-flow on resize, lines get wrapped instead of winged.
316 - circular line buffer (substantially speeds up scrolling).
317 - slightly less code + data memory usage per terminal.
318 - slight overall speed improvements.
319 - considerably improved code clarity.
320 - partial-screen scrolls no longer end up in the scrollback
321 buffer.
322
3235.9 Sat Dec 17 21:53:17 CET 2005
324 - fix a bug in the menu code of unknown impact, found by darix.
325 - clean up signal handling to be global, not per terminal
326 (matters only for rxvtd).
327 - fix small typoe in rxvt.1 (found by Mike Fabian).
328 - don't crash when broken xft/fontconfig/freetype versions return
329 bogus data, ignore the xft font instead (experienced on suse).
330
3315.8 Tue Oct 25 22:21:45 CEST 2005
332 - INCOMPATIBLE CHANGE: many configure options are now on by default.
333 If you want the old behaviour, try:
334 configure --disable-everything <your enable options>
335 - INCOMPATIBLE CHANGE: -fade changed it's meaning to comply with
336 the documentation and common sense: when upgrading, replace your
337 percentage by 100-percentage.
338 - integrated "fade to specific colour" patch by Martin Parm.
339 - slow down the internal visual bell (delay by 20ms) and update
340 the terminfo flash code to use the same delay. This is
341 synchronous, so many bells might inhibit screen updates in other
342 windows.
343 - text with background==foreground colour gets displayed with default
344 bg/fg now when in reverse video, so it can be seen when selecting.
345 - allow koi8r* as x11 encoding name for koi8r (Nikita Danilov).
346 - removed undocumented inheritPixmapforce option.
347 - replaced INSTALL file.
348
3495.7 Wed Jul 13 04:46:33 CEST 2005
350 - implement some useful (hopefully) options for rxvtd.
351 - separate and improved rxvtc(1) and rxvtd(1) manpages.
352 - fix a bug that caused segfaults on startup on systems that do
353 not support local unix connections, e.g cygwin. (btw, I didn't
354 even know about the -rootless and -multiwindow Cygwin/X modes).
355 - large amounts of text without control sequences or newlines
356 could almost freeze output. This has been fixed by adding extra
357 refreshes in these cases (also a problem in original rxvt).
358
3595.6 Sun Jun 26 22:11:13 CEST 2005
360 - R_SB_RXVT bitset value was 0, so rxvt scrollbar was initialised
361 every time resulting in display errors (original rxvt also affected).
362 Reported by Jasmin Buchert.
363 - font names are now considered to be utf-8 encoded (xft apperently
364 uses this convention. X Core fonts might not, but it should be rare).
365 Affects display in iso14755 box.
366 - rewrote the low-level xft drawing function ("xft backend" for the
367 hipper parts of the world) to hopefully cope better with proportional
368 chars mixed with fixed-width ones.
369 - rxvt is now much more careful (read: slower) with potentially
370 overlapping xft characters. It usually overshoots and redraws
371 more than required, but that's better than undershooting and
372 cutting pieces off of characters.
373 - rxvt is now more restrictive in what font heights it accepts for
374 fonts that will likely overshoot or undershoot lines.
375 - fix a cosmetic problem with the unfocused cursor on a wide character
376 at the end of the line (reported by Mikachu).
377 - wide characters not fitting into the end of the line will be
378 output in the next line (reported by Mikachu).
379 - added doc/solaris9.patch by Ewgenij Starostin.
380
3815.5 Sat Apr 23 22:31:36 CEST 2005
382 - re-enabled modifer state matching as in 5.3, but implement
383 a new builtin: keysym style that simply reverts to the built-in
384 meaning of the given key.
385 - use scrollcolor for next scrollbar instead of hardcoded antiquewhite
386 (patch by Martin Edlman).
387
3885.4 Mon Apr 18 00:33:31 CEST 2005
389 - match modifier state exactly in custom keyboard code.
390 this is necessary because it has no knowledge about
391 built-in mappings and so will overwrite them. the priority-code
392 will be re-enabled when this has changed, so watch out.
393 - cursor blinking now depends on frills.
394 - underline cursor mode (frills, -uc).
395 - implement special value (*g*) for pointerBlankDelay
396 to disable it.
397
3985.3 Sun Mar 13 00:20:44 CET 2005
399 - fix a bug that allowed to overflow a buffer via a long
400 escape sequence, which is probably exploitable (fix by
401 Rob Holland / Yoann Vandoorselaere / Gentoo Audit Team).
402 - Custom key mappings no longer confuse mouse buttons
403 with modifiers.
404 - use XmbSetWMProperties instead of XSetWMProperties.
405 - properly update WM_LOCALE.
406 - implement _NET_WM_PING protocol.
407 - implemented escape sequences to move the scrollback buffer view
408 and clear the scrollback buffer.
409
4105.2 Sun Feb 20 01:48:59 CET 2005
411 - new option -pty-fd that makes the terminal a slave
412 that uses an existing pty for I/O instead of starting
413 a command.
414 - implement enough of XEMBED to allow for correct focus.
415 - added doc/embed-tk, an embedding example in Perl/Tk,
416 and doc/rxvt-tabbed, a primitive tabbed shell implemented
417 in Perl/Gtk2.
418 - fix assertion failure ("crash") on mousewheel-scrolling
419 when the terminal height is small, by removing the assert.
420 (reported by Mikael Magnusson).
421 - SYNCCVS. backported bugfixes done to rxvt
422 (sourceforge bugs #1028739, #1028732), except for
423 pts/%s fix as it seems to collide with freebsd,
424 and sourceforge bug #954654, which is not neccessary.
425 - change terminfo file to not clobber G1 when using
426 line-drawing characters, as this seems to mess
427 with EUC-JP (it will clobber G0, but G0 practically
428 needs to be US-ASCII all the time).
429 - toggle default application keypad/cursor mode to help
430 some apps who fail to set the correct mode.
431 - check for WM_PROTOCOLS type in ClientMessage as to
432 not destroy the window for other types of messages.
433 - remove shared library (or any library) support - it is
434 of no use currently (and -embed is a better way to embed
435 rxvt-unicode).
436 - get rid of the intpro files.
437
4385.1 Tue Feb 15 17:13:27 CET 2005
439 - fix a bug when parsing fontnames and another one
440 for empty keymaps which could result in crashes
441 (Kuang-che Wu).
442 - new option: -embed (frills). somebody could write a simple
443 tk script to make a tab'able terminal now...
444 - only warn on X errors and _try_ to continue (frills).
445 - add COPYING back, which got lost somehow.
446 - after deciding that LSM is dead, remove all traces of it,
447 along with other, similar, cleanups.
448 - _try_ to react sensibly to some non-monotonic time changes.
449 - don't crash in urxvtc when getcwd fails (reported by Paco-Paco).
450 - tweak font searching algorithm a bit to be faster and more
451 compatible with older rxvt-unicode versions when multiple fonts
452 match (reported by Paco-Paco).
453 - urxvtd tries to stay in "/" whenever possible.
454
4555.0 Fri Feb 11 18:31:48 CET 2005
456 - document a race-free hack to start urxvtd.
457 - document all(?) environment variables used and set by rxvt.
458 - bring xgetdefault-style resource file ordering more in line with
459 Xt, and document it in rxvt(1).
460 - correctly use screen-dependent resources when --enable-xgetdefault,
461 and also fix some memory bugs (thanks to Thierry Reding for
462 his patience and time in tracking this down).
463 - bring own resource parsing more in line with X resource parsing,
464 most notably, don't remove double quotes.
465 - compile fix for freebsd (no ut_id) (Thierry Thomas).
466 - clean up utmp and pty on X I/O errors and signals (idea
467 by Joël Riou).
468 - "un"document -xrm, it never really worked, was only
469 available with --enable-xgetdefault, is not necessary
470 and is surprisingly hard to implement.
471 - shaved off some code segment size.
472 - various code cleanups.
473 - more keysym-mapping fixes.
474
4754.9 Thu Feb 3 09:52:03 CET 2005
476 - nuke out utmp entries completely. Should be fixed in
477 original rxvt, too. (reported by James Michael Fultz).
478 - resizes wil now correctly refresh the displayed text when
479 -pixmap is active.
480 - new option/resource imFont.
481 - document --tripleclickwords/-tcw.
482 - select logical instead of physical lines when doing a triple-click.
483 - reordered help listing to group similar options together.
484 - handle SIGINT the same way as SIGTERM (reported by Joël Riou).
485 - fix a bug introduced while applying the keyboard patch
486 (WU Fengguang).
487 - document all window-op sequences (rxvt.7.) and more keysym
488 examples (rxvt.1).
489 - removed src/test completely.
490 - renamed keysym 'proto:'-prefix to 'command:'.
491
4924.8 Tue Jan 18 02:23:57 CET 2005
493 - added a patch by WU Fengguang that makes the keyboard
494 highly configurable (e.g. locale changes, custom escape
495 sequences, and more). See keysym resource in rxvt(1).
496 - remove default key sequence for unknown keys again, as this
497 can be achieved by customizing the keyboard now.
498 - fix some freeing problems when destroying the rxvt_display,
499 resulting in segfaults.
500 - don't crash when the saved cursor position doesn't fit on the
501 screen (wrong assert in original rxvt, reported by ikaro).
502 - fix signed/unsigned bugs on wc<->mb conversions.
503 - reset slipwheel scrolling speed when reaching the top or bottom
504 (Mikael Magnusson).
505 - for core fonts, use ascent + descent when a font is loaded,
506 and PIXEL_SIZE when not. when loading a font, iterate until a
507 font has been found that _really_ fits the height (reported and
508 tested by Olivier Wittenberg).
509 - set IUTF8 input flag, when defined (linux-2.6.5+).
510 - only define _XOPEN_SOURCE on solaris.
511 - autogenerate src/* dependency list.
512 - fixed linespace option, which ought to work now (and is dependent
513 on frills, not on it's own configure option).
514 - include pty.h, if available (cygwin).
515 - removed W11 directory from dist, it wasn't used anyway.
516 - initialize the locale much earlier.
517 - fixed two tiny per-instance memory leaks.
518
5194.7 Wed Dec 29 20:54:24 CET 2004
520 - fix a bug in the event logic that could cause the temrinal to be
521 black on initial startup.
522 - do NOT call XCloseIM, ever. This causes way to many crashes due to
523 races in the protocol and within Xlib.
524 - map iso-left-tab to the same sequence as shift-tab.
525 - generate a unique escape sequence for many unknown keys, such as
526 additional multimedia keys.
527 - mask out high (non-unicode) bits on wide characters, to cope with
528 implementations that store tag info in the high bits.
529
5304.6 Thu Dec 16 07:54:23 CET 2004
531 - try very hard not to exhaust the kernel tty buffers, even
532 if it slows down large pastes and is only cosmetic.
533 - streamline atom and xft color allocation to reduce startup
534 time (12.8s -> 7.8s on my dsl). Still, doing it with only 2-3
535 turnarounds would be much faster, but impossible to implement(?).
536 - implement underlineColor resource when ENABLE_FRILLS.
537 - iom left it's signal pipe handle open in the child
538 process. Fortunately not security-relevant as the pipe data gets
539 ignored.
540 - do not use XSETROOTPMAP_ID anymore, support ESETROOT_PMAP_ID
541 instead.
542 - fix a crash in rxvtd when the last window was being closed
543 (reported by hednod).
544 - fix an unlikely memory leak.
545 - fix atom name enumeration.
546
5474.5 Mon Dec 13 07:47:16 CET 2004
548 - fix an extremely nasty bug in utf8-conversion. upgrade is advised.
549 - completely re-wrote selection pasting. This should fix garbled
550 incomplete characters at 32k boundaries and too-short INCR
551 selections, and more. Increases memory requirements considerably
552 for large selections, but that seems unavoidable.
553
5544.4 Sun Dec 12 22:10:06 CET 2004
555 - rewrote handling of default-char width.
556 - implement _NET_WM_NAME et al., and also use UTF8_STRING
557 for the xterm property esc. sequence. Allows i18n window
558 titles etc.
559 - SMART_WINDOW_TITLE removed, pls. complain if you need this.
560 - added GBK encoding (formidable patch by WU Fengguang).
561 - fixed a bug in the transparency code.
562 - upgraded iom.[Ch].
563 - force slower (but more responsive) transparency update.
564 - fix off-by-one bug with wide characters at the end of a line,
565 which got partially overwritten by spaces.
566 - as xlib is completely broken with respect to utf-8 handling
567 and nobody is going to fix it, that part has been re-implemented.
568 should fix most paste problems between apps that use UTF8 encoding
569 and rxvt running in a lesser-supported locale (thanks to Robin Redeker
570 for writing utf8towcs). Only enabled with ENABLE_FRILLS.
571 - darwin compile fix by Ethan Blanton.
572 - fix the colour of the underline, which was rather random before.
573
5744.3 Sat Dec 4 04:58:37 CET 2004
575 - unapply the "emulated graphical chars. respect wcwidth" patch.
576 obviously in locales not having these characters they should
577 still have a width. Solve it correctly by not relying on wcwidth.
578 Note to self: do not ever apply patches without checking them
579 thoroughly.
580 - updated .spec file, it's included in the release tarball
581 now, too.
582
5834.2 Wed Dec 1 03:30:22 CET 2004
584 - make emulated graphical characters respect wcwidth (Kuang-che Wu).
585 - remove debugging code that caused major slowdowns
586 on high-latency networks.
587 - wide characters shift the correct number of characters
588 in insert mode now. Reported by Gunnar Ritter.
589 - doc/rxvt-unicode.spec file contributed by Ville Herva.
590 - make storage of tab movements as characters optional
591 on the -ptab option and pastableTabs: resource. On request
592 by Gunnar Ritter.
593 - fix a bug where :size= argument for xft fonts was ignored
594 or used incorrectly. Reported by Ville Herva.
595
5964.1 Sun Nov 21 21:10:19 CET 2004
597 - save and restore cursor position in secondary screen regardless of
598 -ssc/-ssr settings.
599 - fix some 64-bit bugs that lead to crashes with certain other
600 programs like vncviewer (original rxvt also affected).
601 - added doc/podtbl to the dist tarball.
602 - add compile fix for darwin.
603 - configure fix for transparency without tinting.
604 - changed CN to ZH _really_ everywhere.
605 - upgraded iom.[Ch].
606
6074.0 Mon Sep 13 01:10:26 CEST 2004
608 - turn off autohinting for some badly-hinted fallback fonts.
609 - mnaapge tpyo crorcetoins by Bastian Kleineidam.
610 - implemented rectangular selections (button+meta), experimental.
611 - implement race-free signal handling in iom.C.
612 - use iom.C signal handling to avoid races in signal handling.
613 - use default action on SIGINT and SIGQUIT, instead of terminating.
614 - "the return of the 100 times per second refresh bug".
615 ... terminated by a fix.
616 - new supported preeeditType "None".
617 - added FAQ about possible compose key problems.
618 - changed CN to ZH everywhere (sorry for the confusion).
619 - move XFilterEvent up, as some input method seem to want events
620 for windows not requesting XIM. Please report if this change
621 causes any harm (specially with pointerblanking)
622 (patch by Kuang-che Wu).
623 - send the input method spot position on every refresh, not just
624 when rxvt thinks it should (which was not often enough...).
625 - fix double-wide combining characters (it might look a bit ugly,
626 though, but common cases are handled by normalization anyways).
627 - moved FAQ to rxvt(7), also made a copy into README.FAQ.
628 - fix a bug(?) in the XIM destroy callback.
629 - be more conservative when trying to register new input methods,
630 as Xlib races might make rxvt crash. When two or more
631 input methods are active, killing one probably still crashes rxvt
632 due to that bug :( Thanks a lot to Kuang-che Wu for immense help
633 in tracking this down.
634 - manpages (but not .txt and .html versions) will be patched (during
635 make install) with the correct program name and other info.
636
6373.9 Wed Aug 25 19:24:04 CEST 2004
638 - the change to unsigned int from unsigned short broke
639 many signed comparisons, resulting in failed assertions.
640
6413.8 Wed Aug 25 05:46:56 CEST 2004
642 - WARNING: TERM=rxvt-unicode is now *default* unless compiled
643 differently. A terminfo entry will automatically be compiled and
644 installed if tic is available.
645 - fixed some --disable switches that didn't work.
646 - tweaked src/features.h a bit.
647 - removed README.unicode.
648 - support select&paste of tab characters.
649 - fixed a segfault when trying to load nonexistant fonts (reported
650 by Eduard Bloch and Mikael Magnusson).
651 - fixed a long-standing rxvt bug in which rxvt failed to save
652 and restore the correct cursor position on the secondary screen.
653 - reworked rxvt-unicode terminfo to allow more efficient and less flickering
654 screen updates with curses.
655 - wide characters that are being halfway overwritten are now replaced
656 by spaces.
657 - urxvtc now transmits urxvt as default name, not urxvtc anymore
658 (likewise for other names chosen at configure time).
659 - disabled the automatic font lookup for unknown characters. xft
660 is just too slow for this to work.
661 - changed realbold code, implemented _real_ bold and italic support,
662 where _real_ means the symbiosis of what I want with what I can
663 implement. use --enable-styles.
664 - removed 256 color mode, but enable 88 colours in all modes
665 (88 to be compatible with 88 colour xterm which is widely
666 supported, and most programs assume a non-iso colourtable
667 for terminals with "odd" number of colours).
668 - added doc/etc/rxvt-unicode.terminfo which is a big overhaul
669 compared to the old rxvt terminfo.
670 - sped up xft rendering by 30% *iff* the font allows it (i.e. is
671 monospaced "enough") *and* matches the base font in width.
672 - implement positive and negative character-font caching, which
673 speeds up output immensely in case a character cannot be found
674 (only for non-bold right now).
675 - fix segfault in fading code on certain escape sequences.
676 - better default font size and style.
677 - rxvt-unicode is now much more picky about fonts not fitting
678 into the base font, but to offset this it will check each
679 single character against the base font extents and will only
680 use the characters fitting into the bounding box (+ some fudge).
681 - characters not fitting into the base boundary box will now often
682 be used anyways, but the following characters will be redrawn
683 more often to avoid pixel-droppings. This is like the original
684 rxvt pixel-dropping pass but it's much faster.
685 - scrollColor now affects plain scrollbar (Mikael Magnusson).
686 - fixed segfault in overlay code when height was larger than the
687 screen height.
688 - cursor no longer shines "through" the overlay.
689 - 7-bit ST marker detection was broken.
690 - scrollbar didn't come back sometimes when switching it
691 off/on using escape sequences (Mikael Magnusson).
692 - fix lots of colour problems with focus fading.
693 - $COLORFGBG was not set as documented.
694 - fix iso 14755 5.1 support when --enable-frills but --disable-iso14755.
695 - removed OSC 702.
696 - disabled MOUSE_REPORT_DOUBLECLICK by default, as programs seem to be
697 confused by it rather than using it.
698
6993.7 Tue Aug 17 04:22:25 CEST 2004
700 - new configure option --enable-iso14755.
701 - full iso 14755 conformance (at least I claim so :).
702 - extended the FAQ section in the manpage.
703 - fix OverTheSpot and OffTheSpot editing, which was broken since ages,
704 due to no fontset being available. The fontset used is a very rough
705 approximation to the rxvt font, though. This fixes the
706 "cannot create input context" in most cases.
707 - fix coordinates used for Over && OffTheSpot editing to fit directly
708 at the cursor (Over) or into the top line (Off).
709 - reset SIGHUP and SIGPIPE handlers to default values (they were
710 previously being ignored, causing programs not to exit on windoe
711 close).
712 - implemented simple overlays for feedback messages. believe it or
713 not, this was a major blocker in implementing tabbed terminals.
714 - fix compiling with --disable-frills (Adam Sampson).
715 - clarify bold docs in README.unicode (Adam Sampson).
716 - fix crash on window close when the input method or context
717 could not be created.
718 - add work around for badly written programs (see debian bug
719 #202497). This is _not_ a bug in rxvt but rather a race
720 condition in other programs (e.g. jed). It works by forcefully
721 sending SIGWINCH when rxvt sees the first output from the
722 command. This workaround isn't perfect (a slight cost to
723 wellbehaving programs who need to resize twice), but it usually
724 works.
725 - set correct pixel size in struct winsize.
726 - document more escape sequences.
727 - fix leftover macros and a few minor doc glitches in rxvt(1).
728 - work around bash's assumption that stepping into the middle of a
729 character is a sensible operation.
730 - fix some corner cases in autowrap handling.
731 - remove various useless make cruft, renamed files to better
732 reflect on their function, renamed many variables.
733 - fixed printscreen functionality, as noted by Jinesh Choksi.
734 - fix a problem where redraws of double-width characters sometimes
735 made the last character draw with normal width (especially visible
736 with selections).
737
7383.6 Sat Aug 14 04:55:26 CEST 2004
739 - SECURITY FIX: rxvtd kept open filehandles to other terminal
740 windows when spawning children. Actual risk is low (attacker
741 needs access to a local shell window).
742 - implemented parts 5.1 and 5.2 of ISO 14755 (i.e. hold down
743 Ctrl+Shift and enter hex numbers. space commits it as a unicode
744 character, or press and release Crl+Shift and then enter a
745 function key to get it's picture). patches for 5.3 (or 5.4 with
746 a little window or so) would be welcome.
747 - fixed large pastes (INCR selections, debian bug #191456).
748 - fixed longstanding bug in which rxvtd crashed when
749 a message was logged after startup (a rare case).
750 - got rid of yodl completely by converting to pod.
751 - integrated the FAQ into the manpage. In the future, more will be
752 added there.
753 - reference documentation is now installed as rxvt(7).
754 - rxvt(7) now contains README.configure, which is autogenerated.
755 - fix memory leak in insecure mode on certain display echos.
756 - report sequences now report empty strings in secure mode
757 instead of being ignored.
758 - enable some report sequences even in secure mode, such as colour
759 queries, as they are harmless(tm).
760 - rxvt-unicode will now try to find a matching xft font if it can't
761 find a matching font from the fallback list. It might look ugly,
762 but if a xft font with our character exists, rxvt will find it.
763 - moved FreeMono to the very back of the fallback list, as some
764 people complain it looks ugly. This is a no-win situation, though.
765 - fixed sourceforge bug 998970, reported against aterm:
766 "crash on -sl 0 on super small windows".
767 - decreased memory and code size when !--enable-transparency.
768 - SYNCCVS. backported changes done to rxvt, except for Color_ufbg,
769 which I think is better done through fading, and libW11, which
770 needs testing anyways.
771 - more complete compile options help output.
772 - Provide linear scaled colour cubes for 256 colour mode.
773 Pass them through as rgbi rather than rgb so that Xlib can
774 provide gamma (from per visual intensity lists) rather than
775 providing constant gamma ourselves. Noticed by and ideas from
776 Christopher Casey <realchriscasey@hotmail.com>
777 - minor doc fix.
778
7793.5 Wed Aug 11 00:31:34 CEST 2004
780 - UPGRADE ADVISED: rxvt did wake up 100 times per second. did not
781 show in my top (linux...), but it's extremely annoying that I
782 released it with that bug. :( Fixed.
783 - use memove instead of for-loop for large scrollback buffer copies.
784 speeds up large scrollback buffers (on systems with reasonable
785 memmove :)
786 - minor cleanups.
787 - removed ~ from default cutchars, in accordance with the manpage
788 (debian bug #169415).
789 - fix a race condition on exit (debian bug #197265).
790 - change prio/next scrolling modifier handling (debian bug #226386).
791 - updated configure script to current autoconf standards.
792 - updated config.guess.
793
7943.4 Fri Aug 6 19:34:29 CEST 2004
795 - fix inheritpixmap transparency border code.
796 - fix tinting transparency border code, also experimentally
797 make some scrollbars transparent (e.g. plain, my favourite style :).
798 - imported aterm shading code (faster and still portable).
799 - changed interpretation and usage of shading (-sh).
800 - fixed blinking underlined and negative text.
801 - disable slow link support on connections using unix domain sockets,
802 speeding up scrolling immensely.
803 - various other optimizations.
804 - new borderLess switch (ewmh-compliant), by Mikael Magnusson.
805
8063.3 Sat Jul 31 15:15:59 CEST 2004
807 - some doc updates (Eduard Bloch).
808 - use faster inheritpixmap method when tinting color not set.
809 - fix pixmap offset when tinting (reported by Eduard Bloch).
810 - new -sh option by Mikael Magnusson.
811 - off-focus-fading (--enable-fading) support (patch by
812 Mikael Magnusson).
813 - cursor now set correctly on --disable-blank (reported by
814 Mikael Magnusson).
815 - better (and non-crashing) slipwheeling (Mikael Magnusson).
816 - solaris 2.8 portability changes (reported by Colin Marquardt).
817 - disable-xim now really disables xim code.
818
8193.2 Mon Jul 26 19:57:32 CEST 2004
820 - support real bold fonts (patch by Adam Sampson <azz@us-lot.org>),
821 if specified in the font list (and enabled by -rb).
822 - fixed --enable-keepscrolling and --enable-selectionscrolling, which
823 was broken since 1.8. Patch by Hans de Goede <j.w.r.degoede@hhs.nl>.
824 - fixed --enable-slipwheeling, see above.
825 - sequences ended by ST can now contain any octet by quoting it
826 with ^V (SYN).
827 - 8-bit-controls disabled by default (compiletime option).
828
8293.1 Sat Jun 26 23:38:07 CEST 2004
830 - set default backspace sequence to "DEC" (which defaults to \177)
831 as opposed to \010 as before, which was incorrect (ahem :).
832 - updated doc/etc/rxvt.* to reflect the change. This brings rxvt
833 in line with many existing rxvt terminfo and termcap entries as
834 well as with other terminal emulators.
835 - fix a segfault when trying to set a nonexistant locale
836 (reported by elmex).
837 - find more fonts by default for japanese.
838 - the internal border wasn't always cleared. This is fixed by moving
839 the window relative to it's frame and simplifies a lot of code, too.
840 - fixed quite hard to find scrollbar colour bug, reported by Eduard
841 Bloch.
842
8433.0 Mon May 10 20:47:23 CEST 2004
844 - experimental flickerfree resize mode (I tried to get even
845 less flickering with SouthWestGravity but couldn't get it to work,
846 sorry).
847 - c++-ify (or at least make it compile with g++-3.4, which should
848 make it a little bit more correct c++).
849
8502.9 Sat May 8 19:13:41 CEST 2004
851 - fix some minor doc issues + some generated doc files are now
852 getting distributed (closes debian bug #246035).
853 - minor i18n issue fixes.
854
8552.8 Thu Apr 8 22:44:36 CEST 2004
856 - replace PF_LOCAL by PF_UNIX (portability).
857 - try to detect -lnsl and -lsocket (portability).
858 - fix some minor bugs.
859
8602.7 Mon Apr 5 02:11:15 CEST 2004
861 - this version should now work fine with TERM=xterm, except
862 for the keymappings.
863 - don't leave the X or rxvtd sockets open in child processes.
864 (inherited fd's stay open - different to rxvt).
865 - xterm-compat: implemented OSC3, set/get window property. get is
866 an extension and is slightly ugly.
867 - removed --disable-swapscreen and SCROLL_ON_NO_SECONDARY and
868 replaced them by runtime-configurable options secondaryScreen and
869 secondaryScroll (-ssr and -ssc) (see debian bug #237673).
870 - close down terminal window when child exits. (debian bug #241267).
871 - xterm-compat: enable seperate mouse bg colour setting.
872 - re-enable mouse cursor colours again, fixing colours when fg/bg are
873 overwritten (as is common).
874 - xterm-compat: correctly implement privmodes 1047, 1048, 1049.
875 - ported to solaris by elmar@math.uni-bremen.de.
876
8772.6 Fri Apr 2 03:24:10 CEST 2004
878 - minor doc corrections.
879 - WARNING: changed menu sequence from ESC ] 10 to ESC ] 703 to
880 avoid clashes with xterm.
881 - changed OSC701/OSC702 sequence to return standard escaped reports.
882 - xterm-compat: make set window colour and other requests report
883 window colour when arg is "?".
884 - enable colour tinting of "transparent" backgrounds.
885 - stop ST sequences earlier, as we now react on 0x90 and thus
886 cause conditions more often that look like locks but are, in
887 fact, just rxvt waiting for a ST/BEL etc.
888 - re-enabled most of the "dangerous" echo escapes, but only
889 when -insecure is specified as option or resource (see reference).
890 (FRILLS).
891 - disables sleep(1) on transparency updates on default.
892 - fixes to make it compile better on solaris 2.9 (at least).
893 asprintf replacement is still missing(!).
894 - set _NET_WM_PID.
895
8962.5 Sun Mar 28 04:05:51 CEST 2004
897 - the usual sprinkled little code cleanups.
898 - support more 8-bit controls.
899 - more informative error messages.
900 - fix some minor memleaks and possible memory corruptions.
901 - the use of exception handling allowed the following improvements:
902 - no longer block when waiting for completion of escape sequences
903 (e.g. printf '\e';sleep 3;printf 'c' will no longer block).
904 - rxvtc usage errors should no longer kill rxvtd (debian bug #237510).
905
9062.4 Tue Mar 16 07:06:51 CET 2004
907 - fix stupid double-free() bug on exit.
908 - implement xterm private mode 1049.
909 - fix manpages (debian bug #236824).
910 - removed old selection style completely.
911 - selection works _better_ for non-8-bit and double-width chars.
912 - remove native->unicode translation tables. they aren't used anymore.
913 reduces binary and distro size a bit.
914 - add string representation for JIS X 0213:2000 so these fonts can
915 be used from within rxvt.
916 - less buggy complete set of line-drawing-characters (0x2500-0x259f).
917
9182.3 Sun Mar 14 19:00:07 CET 2004
919 - code cleanup release.
920 - fix compile problems without --enable-combining.
921 - fix segfault when DISPLAY cannot be opened.
922 - removed HOTKEY_CTRL and HOTKEY_SHIFT, ACS_*, FONT0_IDX,
923 MAX_NFONTS. UNICODE and UTF8 defines and references from
924 all files.
925 - default config now reads an app-defaults file even without
926 --enable-xgetdefaults.
927
9282.2 Thu Mar 11 01:41:56 CET 2004
929 - implement autocompositing of characters by either using an existing
930 precomposed unicode character or by graphical overlay. this is
931 also used to store characters >16bit without --enable-unicode3.
932 - selection now based on wchar_t, so that it can offer UTF-8
933 selections even in locales unable to represent full unicode.
934 - tis620-2529 is, of course, thai, not vietnamese...
935 - a typoe prevented characters >65535 to be stored properly.
936 - wcwidth is unreliable in non-unicode-locales on GNU/Linux.
937 working around this fixes line-drawing characters in non-utf-8 mode.
938 - improved rounding when emulating line-drawing characters.
939 - implement continuation lines in xresource parsing when
940 --disable-xgetdefault.
941 - changed locale-setting esc-sequence from code 9 to code 701.
942 also added 702 that returns the font selected for a specific
943 unicode character.
944 - no longer set CUT_BUFFER0. this is confusing and clients WILL
945 get it wrong.
946 - don't use XTextStyle for TEXT, instead use XStdICCTextStyle.
947
9482.1 Wed Mar 3 21:48:39 CET 2004
949 - NOTE: the name of the binary and resources were changed in
950 this version, see README.configure if you want the old
951 settings.
952 - added plain "big5" encoding into CN.
953 - make cns11643 and big5* encodings actually visible to rxvt.
954 - fix a bug when a multibyte character fell onto a buffer boundary,
955 causing the incomplete character to be presented twice to
956 mbrtowc.
957 - more robust encoding name matching.
958 - fix cursor placement on multibyte characters.
959 - when overwriting wide with narrow chars, pad with spaces.
960 - fix various refresh and display issues for wide chars.
961 - remove multibyte_cursor hack (it was a hack) and associated
962 resources and docs.
963 - fixed memory corruption bug with XLFD fontname parsing.
964
9652.0 Sun Feb 29 23:59:58 CET 2004
966 - do not blink text when background colour is not set explicitly.
967 - some doc cleanup
968 - configure cleanup
969 - viscii enabled by default
970 - better support for non-g++-3.2+ systems (tested with g++-2.95).
971
9721.91 Fri Feb 27 03:57:44 CET 2004
973 - build fixes for !xft and !im, reported by various people.
974
9751.9 Wed Feb 25 16:46:05 CET 2004
976 - fixed bug in plain scrollbar causing X errors in XCreateGC.
977 - implemented sharing of X connections. will be used to speed
978 up many x operations considerably. Also saves some memory.
979 - implemented caching of input methods. This immensely shortens
980 startup time for new terms in rxvtd. At least XFree86 4.3 is
981 rather broken with respect to input methods, though, so expect
982 crashes when you kill your input method (xterm et al. also crash).
983 - fix bugs in X flushing, causing an empty screen after startup.
984 - fix various memleaks in rxvtd.
985 - fix a bug that kept escape codes to be generated for some
986 keysyms that also have string translations, when not --enable-xim.
987 reported by joel reed.
988 - re-enabled esc-seq. for font-switching (\033 ] 50 ; <fontset> \007).
989 - re-enabled menubar (experimental!).
990 - fix bug in locale-handling that kept the correct locale from
991 being selected.
992 - implemented esc-seq. to switch locales (\033 ] 9 ; <locale> \007).
993 - removed greek support.
994 - allow NUL bytes (ctrl-@) to be entered even with XIM enabled.
995 - correct cursor width if !focus.
996 - fixed --enable-xgetdefault, reported by eduard bloch.
997 - added manpage for rxvtc/rxvtd based on the one eduard bloch
998 contributed.
999 - use reverse video for normal bold text unless colorBD has been set.
1000 - fixed endless loop when selection is valid but empty.
1001 - changed default terminal name to "rxvt".
1002 - many other minor bugfixes.
1003
10041.8 Mon Feb 2 20:09:18 CET 2004
1005 - almost total conversion to C++. Except for introducing
1006 new bugs, this should not change much.
1007 - fix and re-enable background pixmap and inherit pixmap support.
1008 - re-enabled multiple scrollbar support.
1009 - added plain scrollbar style and restored xterm scrollbar.
1010 - blinking and selections work slightly better now.
1011 - fix an error condition when rxvt receives more than one screenful
1012 of output. should occur with original rxvt, too, but very rarely.
1013 (I guess the code contains more surprises of this sort...)
1014
10151.7 Fri Jan 30 16:50:11 CET 2004
1016 - further cleanups.
1017 - never do last-minute-changes: restore ability to have
1018 color + bold as high-intensity, and let the selection
1019 use reverse video, not _blink_.
1020 - remove OPTION_HC, at least temporarily. If you want it back,
1021 please drop me a note.
