Comparing rxvt-unicode/Changes (file contents):
Revision 1.137 by root, Fri Jul 30 22:39:43 2004 UTC vs.
Revision 1.400 by root, Mon Jun 13 15:51:15 2005 UTC

1Lines marked with "xterm:" indicate either xterm features ported to rxvt 1TODO: F="Monaco CY" rxvt -fn 9x15bold -fb xft:"$F":bold -fi xft:"$F":italic -fbi xft:"$F":bold, italic vi screen.C scroll changed italic N

3xfree86's xterm). 3TODO: safer command: keymap processing.
4TODO: "slow" rendering mode for bidi and scripts
5TODO: read property sequence is broken with respect to utf-8 etc.

10WISH: double-click: more intelligent (urls etc.)
11WISH: OnTheSpot editing, or maybe switch to miiiiiiif
12WISH: tabbed windows (hey, just use screen...)
13WISH: just for fun, do shade and tint with XRender.

5TODO: implement xterm mode to be able to use xfree's TERM=xterm. 155.6
6TODO: multibyte support for setwmname et al. 16 - R_SB_RXVT bitset value was 0, so rxvt scrollbar was initialized
7TODO: there are other todo items, but they are not in this file. 17 every time (original rxvt also affected). Reported by Jasmin

8 19
93.3 205.5 Sat Apr 23 22:31:36 CEST 2005
21 - re-enabled modifer state matching as in 5.3, but implement
22 a new builtin: keysym style that simply reverts to the built-in
23 meaning of the given key.
24 - use scrollcolor for next scrollbar instead of hardcoded antiquewhite
25 (patch by Martin Edlman).
26
275.4 Mon Apr 18 00:33:31 CEST 2005
28 - match modifier state exactly in custom keyboard code.
29 this is necessary because it has no knowledge about
30 built-in mappings and so will overwrite them. the priority-code
31 will be re-enabled when this has changed, so watch out.
32 - cursor blinking now depends on frills.
33 - underline cursor mode (frills, -uc).
34 - implement special value (*g*) for pointerBlankDelay
35 to disble it.
36
375.3 Sun Mar 13 00:20:44 CET 2005
38 - fix a bug that allowed to overflow a buffer via a long
39 escape sequence, which is probably exploitable (fix by
40 Rob Holland / Yoann Vandoorselaere / Gentoo Audit Team).
41 - Custom key mappings no longer confuse mouse buttons
42 with modifiers.
43 - use XmbSetWMProperties instead of XSetWMProperties.
44 - properly update WM_LOCALE.
45 - implement _NET_WM_PING protocol.
46 - implemented escape sequences to move the scrollback buffer view
47 and clear the scrollback buffer.
48
495.2 Sun Feb 20 01:48:59 CET 2005
50 - new option -pty-fd that makes the terminal a slave
51 that uses an existing pty for I/O instead of starting
52 a command.
53 - implement enough of XEMBED to allow for correct focus.
54 - added doc/embed-tk, an embedding example in Perl/Tk,
55 and doc/rxvt-tabbed, a primitive tabbed shell implemented
56 in Perl/Gtk2.
57 - fix assertion failure ("crash") on mousewheel-scrolling
58 when the terminal height is small, by removing the assert.
59 (reported by Mikael Magnusson).
60 - SYNCCVS. backported bugfixes done to rxvt
61 (sourceforge bugs #1028739, #1028732), except for
62 pts/%s fix as it seems to collide with freebsd,
63 and sourceforge bug #954654, which is not neccessary.
64 - change terminfo file to not clobber G1 when using
65 line-drawing characters, as this seems to mess
66 with EUC-JP (it will clobber G0, but G0 practically
67 needs to be US-ASCII all the time).
68 - toggle default application keypad/cursor mode to help
69 some apps who fail to set the correct mode.
70 - check for WM_PROTOCOLS type in ClientMessage as to
71 not destroy the window for other types of messages.
72 - remove shared library (or any library) support - it is
73 of no use currently (and -embed is a better way to embed
74 rxvt-unicode).
75 - get rid of the intpro files.
76
775.1 Tue Feb 15 17:13:27 CET 2005
78 - fix a bug when parsing fontnames and another one
79 for empty keymaps which could result in crashes
80 (Kuang-che Wu).
81 - new option: -embed (frills). somebody could write a simple
82 tk script to make a tab'able terminal now...
83 - only warn on X errors and _try_ to continue (frills).
84 - add COPYING back, which got lost somehow.
85 - after deciding that LSM is dead, remove all traces of it,
86 along with other, similar, cleanups.
87 - _try_ to react sensibly to some non-monotonic time changes.
88 - don't crash in urxvtc when getcwd fails (reported by Paco-Paco).
89 - tweak font searching algorithm a bit to be faster and more
90 compatible with older rxvt-unicode versions when multiple fonts
91 match (reported by Paco-Paco).
92 - urxvtd tries to stay in "/" whenever possible.
93
945.0 Fri Feb 11 18:31:48 CET 2005
95 - document a race-free hack to start urxvtd.
96 - document all(?) environment variables used and set by rxvt.
97 - bring xgetdefault-style resource file ordering more in line with
98 Xt, and document it in rxvt(1).
99 - correctly use screen-dependent resources when --enable-xgetdefault,
100 and also fix some memory bugs (thanks to Thierry Reding for
101 his patience and time in tracking this down).
102 - bring own resource parsing more in line with X resource parsing,
103 most notably, don't remove double quotes.
104 - compile fix for freebsd (no ut_id) (Thierry Thomas).
105 - clean up utmp and pty on X I/O errors and signals (idea
106 by Joël Riou).
107 - "un"document -xrm, it never really worked, was only
108 available with --enable-xgetdefault, is not necessary
109 and is surprisingly hard to implement.
110 - shaved off some code segment size.
111 - various code cleanups.
112 - more keysym-mapping fixes.
113
1144.9 Thu Feb 3 09:52:03 CET 2005
115 - nuke out utmp entries completely. Should be fixed in
116 original rxvt, too. (reported by James Michael Fultz).
117 - resizes wil now correctly refresh the displayed text when
118 -pixmap is active.
119 - new option/resource imFont.
120 - document --tripleclickwords/-tcw.
121 - select logical instead of physical lines when doing a triple-click.
122 - reordered help listing to group similar options together.
123 - handle SIGINT the same way as SIGTERM (reported by Joël Riou).
124 - fix a bug introduced while applying the keyboard patch
125 (WU Fengguang).
126 - document all window-op sequences (rxvt.7.) and more keysym
127 examples (rxvt.1).
128 - removed src/test completely.
129 - renamed keysym 'proto:'-prefix to 'command:'.
130
1314.8 Tue Jan 18 02:23:57 CET 2005
132 - added a patch by WU Fengguang that makes the keyboard
133 highly configurable (e.g. locale changes, custom escape
134 sequences, and more). See keysym resource in rxvt(1).
135 - remove default key sequence for unknown keys again, as this
136 can be achieved by customizing the keyboard now.
137 - fix some freeing problems when destroying the rxvt_display,
138 resulting in segfaults.
139 - don't crash when the saved cursor position doesn't fit on the
140 screen (wrong assert in original rxvt, reported by ikaro).
141 - fix signed/unsigned bugs on wc<->mb conversions.
142 - reset slipwheel scrolling speed when reaching the top or bottom
143 (Mikael Magnusson).
144 - for core fonts, use ascent + descent when a font is loaded,
145 and PIXEL_SIZE when not. when loading a font, iterate until a
146 font has been found that _really_ fits the height (reported and
147 tested by Olivier Wittenberg).
148 - set IUTF8 input flag, when defined (linux-2.6.5+).
149 - only define _XOPEN_SOURCE on solaris.
150 - autogenerate src/* dependency list.
151 - fixed linespace option, which ought to work now (and is dependent
152 on frills, not on it's own configure option).
153 - include pty.h, if available (cygwin).
154 - removed W11 directory from dist, it wasn't used anyway.
155 - initialize the locale much earlier.
156 - fixed two tiny per-instance memory leaks.
157
1584.7 Wed Dec 29 20:54:24 CET 2004
159 - fix a bug in the event logic that could cause the temrinal to be
160 black on initial startup.
161 - do NOT call XCloseIM, ever. This causes way to many crashes due to
162 races in the protocol and within Xlib.
163 - map iso-left-tab to the same sequence as shift-tab.
164 - generate a unique escape sequence for many unknown keys, such as
165 additional multimedia keys.
166 - mask out high (non-unicode) bits on wide characters, to cope with
167 implementations that store tag info in the high bits.
168
1694.6 Thu Dec 16 07:54:23 CET 2004
170 - try very hard not to exhaust the kernel tty buffers, even
171 if it slows down large pastes and is only cosmetic.
172 - streamline atom and xft color allocation to reduce startup
173 time (12.8s -> 7.8s on my dsl). Still, doing it with only 2-3
174 turnarounds would be much faster, but impossible to implement(?).
175 - implement underlineColor resource when ENABLE_FRILLS.
176 - iom left it's signal pipe handle open in the child
177 process. Fortunately not security-relevant as the pipe data gets
178 ignored.
179 - do not use XSETROOTPMAP_ID anymore, support ESETROOT_PMAP_ID
180 instead.
181 - fix a crash in rxvtd when the last window was being closed
182 (reported by hednod).
183 - fix an unlikely memory leak.
184 - fix atom name enumeration.
185
1864.5 Mon Dec 13 07:47:16 CET 2004
187 - fix an extremely nasty bug in utf8-conversion. upgrade is advised.
188 - completely re-wrote selection pasting. This should fix garbled
189 incomplete characters at 32k boundaries and too-short INCR
190 selections, and more. Increases memory requirements considerably
191 for large selections, but that seems unavoidable.
192
1934.4 Sun Dec 12 22:10:06 CET 2004
194 - rewrote handling of default-char width.
195 - implement _NET_WM_NAME et al., and also use UTF8_STRING
196 for the xterm property esc. sequence. Allows i18n window
197 titles etc.
198 - SMART_WINDOW_TITLE removed, pls. complain if you need this.
199 - added GBK encoding (formidable patch by WU Fengguang).
200 - fixed a bug in the transparency code.
201 - upgraded iom.[Ch].
202 - force slower (but more responsive) transparency update.
203 - fix off-by-one bug with wide characters at the end of a line,
204 which got partially overwritten by spaces.
205 - as xlib is completely broken with respect to utf-8 handling
206 and nobody is going to fix it, that part has been re-implemented.
207 should fix most paste problems between apps that use UTF8 encoding
208 and rxvt running in a lesser-supported locale (thanks to Robin Redeker
209 for writing utf8towcs). Only enabled with ENABLE_FRILLS.
210 - darwin compile fix by Ethan Blanton.
211 - fix the colour of the underline, which was rather random before.
212
2134.3 Sat Dec 4 04:58:37 CET 2004
214 - unapply the "emulated graphical chars. respect wcwidth" patch.
215 obviously in locales not having these characters they should
216 still have a width. Solve it correctly by not relying on wcwidth.
217 Note to self: do not ever apply patches without checking them
218 thoroughly.
219 - updated .spec file, it's included in the release tarball
220 now, too.
221
2224.2 Wed Dec 1 03:30:22 CET 2004
223 - make emulated graphical characters respect wcwidth (Kuang-che Wu).
224 - remove debugging code that caused major slowdowns
225 on high-latency networks.
226 - wide characters shift the correct number of characters
227 in insert mode now. Reported by Gunnar Ritter.
228 - doc/rxvt-unicode.spec file contributed by Ville Herva.
229 - make storage of tab movements as characters optional
230 on the -ptab option and pastableTabs: resource. On request
231 by Gunnar Ritter.
232 - fix a bug where :size= argument for xft fonts was ignored
233 or used incorrectly. Reported by Ville Herva.
234
2354.1 Sun Nov 21 21:10:19 CET 2004
236 - save and restore cursor position in secondary screen regardless of
237 -ssc/-ssr settings.
238 - fix some 64-bit bugs that lead to crashes with certain other
239 programs like vncviewer (original rxvt also affected).
240 - added doc/podtbl to the dist tarball.
241 - add compile fix for darwin.
242 - configure fix for transparency without tinting.
243 - changed CN to ZH _really_ everywhere.
244 - upgraded iom.[Ch].
245
2464.0 Mon Sep 13 01:10:26 CEST 2004
247 - turn off autohinting for some badly-hinted fallback fonts.
248 - mnaapge tpyo crorcetoins by Bastian Kleineidam.
249 - implemented rectangular selections (button+meta), experimental.
250 - implement race-free signal handling in iom.C.
251 - use iom.C signal handling to avoid races in signal handling.
252 - use default action on SIGINT and SIGQUIT, instead of terminating.
253 - "the return of the 100 times per second refresh bug".
254 ... terminated by a fix.
255 - new supported preeeditType "None".
256 - added FAQ about possible compose key problems.
257 - changed CN to ZH everywhere (sorry for the confusion).
258 - move XFilterEvent up, as some input method seem to want events
259 for windows not requesting XIM. Please report if this change
260 causes any harm (specially with pointerblanking)
261 (patch by Kuang-che Wu).
262 - send the input method spot position on every refresh, not just
263 when rxvt thinks it should (which was not often enough...).
264 - fix double-wide combining characters (it might look a bit ugly,
265 though, but common cases are handled by normalization anyways).
266 - moved FAQ to rxvt(7), also made a copy into README.FAQ.
267 - fix a bug(?) in the XIM destroy callback.
268 - be more conservative when trying to register new input methods,
269 as Xlib races might make rxvt crash. When two or more
270 input methods are active, killing one probably still crashes rxvt
271 due to that bug :( Thanks a lot to Kuang-che Wu for immense help
272 in tracking this down.
273 - manpages (but not .txt and .html versions) will be patched (during
274 make install) with the correct program name and other info.
275
2763.9 Wed Aug 25 19:24:04 CEST 2004
277 - the change to unsigned int from unsigned short broke
278 many signed comparisons, resulting in failed assertions.
279
2803.8 Wed Aug 25 05:46:56 CEST 2004
281 - WARNING: TERM=rxvt-unicode is now *default* unless compiled
282 differently. A terminfo entry will automatically be compiled and
283 installed if tic is available.
284 - fixed some --disable switches that didn't work.
285 - tweaked src/features.h a bit.
286 - removed README.unicode.
287 - support select&paste of tab characters.
288 - fixed a segfault when trying to load nonexistant fonts (reported
289 by Eduard Bloch and Mikael Magnusson).
290 - fixed a long-standing rxvt bug in which rxvt failed to save
291 and restore the correct cursor position on the secondary screen.
292 - reworked rxvt-unicode terminfo to allow more efficient and less flickering
293 screen updates with curses.
294 - wide characters that are being halfway overwritten are now replaced
295 by spaces.
296 - urxvtc now transmits urxvt as default name, not urxvtc anymore
297 (likewise for other names chosen at configure time).
298 - disabled the automatic font lookup for unknown characters. xft
299 is just too slow for this to work.
300 - changed realbold code, implemented _real_ bold and italic support,
301 where _real_ means the symbiosis of what I want with what I can
302 implement. use --enable-styles.
303 - removed 256 color mode, but enable 88 colours in all modes
304 (88 to be compatible with 88 colour xterm which is widely
305 supported, and most programs assume a non-iso colourtable
306 for terminals with "odd" number of colours).
307 - added doc/etc/rxvt-unicode.terminfo which is a big overhaul
308 compared to the old rxvt terminfo.
309 - sped up xft rendering by 30% *iff* the font allows it (i.e. is
310 monospaced "enough") *and* matches the base font in width.
311 - implement positive and negative character-font caching, which
312 speeds up output immensely in case a character cannot be found
313 (only for non-bold right now).
314 - fix segfault in fading code on certain escape sequences.
315 - better default font size and style.
316 - rxvt-unicode is now much more picky about fonts not fitting
317 into the base font, but to offset this it will check each
318 single character against the base font extents and will only
319 use the characters fitting into the bounding box (+ some fudge).
320 - characters not fitting into the base boundary box will now often
321 be used anyways, but the following characters will be redrawn
322 more often to avoid pixel-droppings. This is like the original
323 rxvt pixel-dropping pass but it's much faster.
324 - scrollColor now affects plain scrollbar (Mikael Magnusson).
325 - fixed segfault in overlay code when height was larger than the
326 screen height.
327 - cursor no longer shines "through" the overlay.
328 - 7-bit ST marker detection was broken.
329 - scrollbar didn't come back sometimes when switching it
330 off/on using escape sequences (Mikael Magnusson).
331 - fix lots of colour problems with focus fading.
332 - $COLORFGBG was not set as documented.
333 - fix iso 14755 5.1 support when --enable-frills but --disable-iso14755.
334 - removed OSC 702.
335 - disabled MOUSE_REPORT_DOUBLECLICK by default, as programs seem to be
336 confused by it rather than using it.
337
3383.7 Tue Aug 17 04:22:25 CEST 2004
339 - new configure option --enable-iso14755.
340 - full iso 14755 conformance (at least I claim so :).
341 - extended the FAQ section in the manpage.
342 - fix OverTheSpot and OffTheSpot editing, which was broken since ages,
343 due to no fontset being available. The fontset used is a very rough
344 approximation to the rxvt font, though. This fixes the
345 "cannot create input context" in most cases.
346 - fix coordinates used for Over && OffTheSpot editing to fit directly
347 at the cursor (Over) or into the top line (Off).
348 - reset SIGHUP and SIGPIPE handlers to default values (they were
349 previously being ignored, causing programs not to exit on windoe
350 close).
351 - implemented simple overlays for feedback messages. believe it or
352 not, this was a major blocker in implementing tabbed terminals.
353 - fix compiling with --disable-frills (Adam Sampson).
354 - clarify bold docs in README.unicode (Adam Sampson).
355 - fix crash on window close when the input method or context
356 could not be created.
357 - add work around for badly written programs (see debian bug
358 #202497). This is _not_ a bug in rxvt but rather a race
359 condition in other programs (e.g. jed). It works by forcefully
360 sending SIGWINCH when rxvt sees the first output from the
361 command. This workaround isn't perfect (a slight cost to
362 wellbehaving programs who need to resize twice), but it usually
363 works.
364 - set correct pixel size in struct winsize.
365 - document more escape sequences.
366 - fix leftover macros and a few minor doc glitches in rxvt(1).
367 - work around bash's assumption that stepping into the middle of a
368 character is a sensible operation.
369 - fix some corner cases in autowrap handling.
370 - remove various useless make cruft, renamed files to better
371 reflect on their function, renamed many variables.
372 - fixed printscreen functionality, as noted by Jinesh Choksi.
373 - fix a problem where redraws of double-width characters sometimes
374 made the last character draw with normal width (especially visible
375 with selections).
376
3773.6 Sat Aug 14 04:55:26 CEST 2004
378 - SECURITY FIX: rxvtd kept open filehandles to other terminal
379 windows when spawning children. Actual risk is low (attacker
380 needs access to a local shell window).
381 - implemented parts 5.1 and 5.2 of ISO 14755 (i.e. hold down
382 Ctrl+Shift and enter hex numbers. space commits it as a unicode
383 character, or press and release Crl+Shift and then enter a
384 function key to get it's picture). patches for 5.3 (or 5.4 with
385 a little window or so) would be welcome.
386 - fixed large pastes (INCR selections, debian bug #191456).
387 - fixed longstanding bug in which rxvtd crashed when
388 a message was logged after startup (a rare case).
389 - got rid of yodl completely by converting to pod.
390 - integrated the FAQ into the manpage. In the future, more will be
391 added there.
392 - reference documentation is now installed as rxvt(7).
393 - rxvt(7) now contains README.configure, which is autogenerated.
394 - fix memory leak in insecure mode on certain display echos.
395 - report sequences now report empty strings in secure mode
396 instead of being ignored.
397 - enable some report sequences even in secure mode, such as colour
398 queries, as they are harmless(tm).
399 - rxvt-unicode will now try to find a matching xft font if it can't
400 find a matching font from the fallback list. It might look ugly,
401 but if a xft font with our character exists, rxvt will find it.
402 - moved FreeMono to the very back of the fallback list, as some
403 people complain it looks ugly. This is a no-win situation, though.
404 - fixed sourceforge bug 998970, reported against aterm:
405 "crash on -sl 0 on super small windows".
406 - decreased memory and code size when !--enable-transparency.
407 - SYNCCVS. backported changes done to rxvt, except for Color_ufbg,
408 which I think is better done through fading, and libW11, which
409 needs testing anyways.
410 - more complete compile options help output.
411 - Provide linear scaled colour cubes for 256 colour mode.
412 Pass them through as rgbi rather than rgb so that Xlib can
413 provide gamma (from per visual intensity lists) rather than
414 providing constant gamma ourselves. Noticed by and ideas from
415 Christopher Casey <realchriscasey@hotmail.com>
416 - minor doc fix.
417
4183.5 Wed Aug 11 00:31:34 CEST 2004
419 - UPGRADE ADVISED: rxvt did wake up 100 times per second. did not
420 show in my top (linux...), but it's extremely annoying that I
421 released it with that bug. :( Fixed.
422 - use memove instead of for-loop for large scrollback buffer copies.
423 speeds up large scrollback buffers (on systems with reasonable
424 memmove :)
425 - minor cleanups.
426 - removed ~ from default cutchars, in accordance with the manpage
427 (debian bug #169415).
428 - fix a race condition on exit (debian bug #197265).
429 - change prio/next scrolling modifier handling (debian bug #226386).
430 - updated configure script to current autoconf standards.
431 - updated config.guess.
432
4333.4 Fri Aug 6 19:34:29 CEST 2004
434 - fix inheritpixmap transparency border code.
435 - fix tinting transparency border code, also experimentally
436 make some scrollbars transparent (e.g. plain, my favourite style :).
437 - imported aterm shading code (faster and still portable).
438 - changed interpretation and usage of shading (-sh).
439 - fixed blinking underlined and negative text.
440 - disable slow link support on connections using unix domain sockets,
441 speeding up scrolling immensely.
442 - various other optimizations.
443 - new borderLess switch (ewmh-compliant), by Mikael Magnusson.
444
4453.3 Sat Jul 31 15:15:59 CEST 2004
10 - some doc updates (Eduard Bloch). 446 - some doc updates (Eduard Bloch).
