1rxvt-unicode changelog <= google-friendly title
2
3TODO: event mechanism that replaces on_keyboard_command with something more scalable.
4TODO: overlays collide with the way the out-of-focus cursor is being drawn
5TODO: simplify selection_request and make it callable from perl.
6TODO: split perl documentation and urxvt.pm into separate files
7TODO: harmonize --disable-options into position-dependent options.
8TODO: "slow" rendering mode for bidi and scripts
9TODO: read property sequence is broken with respect to utf-8 etc.
10WISH: anyevent mouse notification / manage MotionMask better.
11WISH: http://www120.pair.com/mccarthy/nextstep/intro.htmld/Workspace.html is the correct nextstep look.
12DUMB: support tex fonts
13
14 - SYNCCVS: compared to rxvt-cvs 2006-01-28, no relevant changes.
15 - fix version report (DA) (which was unfortunately broken).
16 - changed version number report again, now to emulate xterm closer.
17 - added the OSC sequence 702 to detect the urxvt version number.
18 - small configure updates.
19 - overhauled color management: smaller codesize, alpha support.
20 - support rgba:rrrr/gggg/bbbb/aaaa, #argb, #aarrggbb and
21 #aaaarrrrggggbbbb (yes, it did hurt) colour "names".
22 - try to work around Xft and Xrender forcing everything to be 100%
23 transparent. Long Live Xft!
24 - do not include X11/Intrinsic.h anymore, directly use
25 Xlib/Xutil/Xresource directly.
26 - further improve the careful mode detection, and font width
27 detection:
28 - fully double-wide fonts will now be correctly treated,
29 - overlap detection was improved.
30 - detect totally broken fonts (usually synthesized by xft).
31 - careful mode forced refresh sometimes clashed with blinking,
32 causing unnecessary screen redraws.
33 - better handling of XFT combining characters.
34 - enable antialiasing for some replacement fonts, as they
35 might get used for other encodings which really need it, later.
36 - remove spacing=100 from all default fonts, as this creates totally
37 weird spacing (5 times normal) with xft.
38 - replace named colours by xorg's rgb.txt equivalents, to
39 reduce round trip time on startup, and short-cut allocation
40 of rgb:rr/gg/bb.
41 - further RTT optimisations.
42
437.4 Sat Jan 28 15:26:27 CET 2006
44 - screen background wasn't always erased properly when scrolling,
45 - re-enabled clearing optimisation disabled in 7.4pre.
46 - small configure updates for libptytty.
47 - fixed version options: line output.
48 - removed stoopid debugging message left in the code.
49
507.3 Wed Jan 25 22:47:35 CET 2006
51 - don't let iso14755 or mouse reporting get into the way of perl
52 (could lead to global grabs never being cleared).
53 - experimental OnTheSpot editing support (-pe xim-onthespot).
54 - moved Shift-Button2 paste combination to Meta-Button2.
55 - the cutchars resource will now be respected and used by the
56 selection extension.
57 - added the "remote-clipboard" extension which just runs external
58 commands to fetch and store the selection data.
59 - added -depth switch that tries to get a different visual depth
60 than the default (replaces the old PREFER_24_BIT logic).
61 - removed (unused) arabic presentation form composing sequences.
62 - be more strict when deciding that a core font glyph is too wide and
63 needs the careful rendering mode.
64 - allow more leeway for italic fonts when deciding that a character is
65 too wide and needs careful mode.
66 - redraw even more characters around characters using careful mode.
67 - made selection-pastebin fully asynchronous.
68 - reduced number of server turnarounds at startup by allocating
69 atoms only once per display.
70 - renamed on_keyboard_command to on_user_command.
71 - changed version sos (ESC [ > c) response to be more compatible with
72 xterm.
73
747.2 Sun Jan 22 21:58:16 CET 2006
75 - bugfix: urxvt (not urxvtd) did not correctly handle multiple
76 environments necessary, which resulted in segfaults within
77 getenv (reproducable: urxvt -fn 9x15, open a menu once,
78 ctrl-shift-672c).
79 - bugfix: the selection speedup in in 7.1 unfortunately caused
80 non-ascii characters to enlarge/move the selection.
81 - bugfix: resizing sometimes leaked lines from the secondary to
82 the primary screen.
83 - bugfix: reducing window size while large amounts of text were output
84 could lead to an assertion failure.
85 - added "tabbed" extension that provides a crude tabbed terminal.
86 - added "readline" extension that allows cursor positioning
87 via mouse clicks.
88 - now it is possible to insert the value of the CLIPBOARD selection
89 with shift - mouse button 2.
90 - fixed the automove-background extension to ignore coordinates
91 in non-synthetic events.
92 - created a separate libpty for portable and secure
93 pty/tty/utmp/wtmp/lastlog handling, and include it in rxvt-unicode.
94 - the non-terminfo visual bell now works asynchronously, so
95 continuous ASCI BELs in one terminal do no longer monopolise the
96 whole urxvt[d] process.
97 - support some *BSD makes (for the time being, gnu make is a safe bet).
98 - work around bugs in FreeBSD's gcc.
99 - implemented some *BSD fixes in configure.
100 - removed support for obsolete offix dnd protocol.
101
1027.1 Thu Jan 19 20:25:34 CET 2006
103 - setuid/setgid operation is now _encouraged_: security has been
104 improved by moving privileged operations into a separate process
105 and permanently dropping privileges within the terminal. This
106 makes it possible to remove security checks from the perl code
107 and gives a much safer feeling when urxvt needs to run with
108 special privileges.
109 - perl taint checking disabled, as urxvt no longer runs setuid/setgid
110 itself.
111 - new perl extension automove-background that can be used to get
112 the same effect as pseudo-transparency with any pixmap.
113 - new perl extension example: perl/selection-pastebin, can be used to
114 e.g. upload the selection to a webserver and generate a url, or
115 similar stuff.
116 - use the scrollback buffer even when the scroll region doesn't
117 span the whole screen, as long as it starts at row 0. Helps
118 for programs displaying a status line at the bottom.
119 - selection popup now shows selection in dec/hex/oct.
120 - perl/selection: matching on unicode characters in the selection
121 code was O(n²), which equals infinity in some degenerate cases
122 :-> Matching is now done on UTF-8, which makes it almost instant.
123 - perl/selection, perl/selection-autotransform: regexes are now
124 being interpreted in the locale urxvt was started.
125 - implemented override-redirect option and enabled it on menus,
126 as kwin puts our windows behind the terminal (what a shoddy wm).
127 - fixed struct utmp check in configure for OpenBSD.
128 - complete overhaul of the pty/utmp management stuff and configure
129 (Emanuele Giaquinta).
130 - add tsl/fsl and related capabilities to the terminfo description,
131 to set the window title.
132 - swap the environment in some more cases. This hopefully fixes
133 some segfaults that might be caused by xft asking for env variables
134 at the wrong time.
135 - removed src/strings.C and src/menubar.C. No menubar support
136 anymore.
137 - removed all traces of SMOOTH_REFRESH.
138 - nuked QNX support.
139 - made some fixes to xpm offset and scaling code.
140 - perl-overlays and refresh hooks were not applied in correct order.
141 - changed coordinate-system of view_start/nsaved to be top to bottom.
142 - iom extended to support listening for child exits.
143
1447.0 Fri Jan 13 14:02:18 CET 2006
145 - added sections for DISTRIBUTION MAINTAINERS and about
146 SETUID/SETGID to the FAQ.
147 - selection, searchable-scrollback, selection-popup and
148 option-popup extensions enabled by default.
149 - increased xft drawing speed for problematic fonts. The effect
150 will likely be small as 99% of the xft slowness is server-related.
151 - perl: much increased functionality, better overlays, popup support
152 and much much more.
153 - perl: urxvt::line now can set via ->t and ->r.
154 - perl: changed interpretation of --perl-ext-common and -pe.
155 - perl: finally implemented --perl-eval.
156 - perl: non-blocking anyevent support.
157 - perl: run tainted and ignore perl-eval/perl-lib if started
158 setuid/setgid.
159 - free the resource database: this plugs a massive memory leak. As a
160 side effect, it also gets rid of XGetDefault calls.
161 - free one of the cursors, fixes a small memory leak.
162 - built-in (as opposed to terminfos) visual bell was broken/too fast.
163 - applied minor cleanups by Ladislav Michnovic.
164 - applied pty handling cleanups and improvements (Emanuele Giaquinta).
165 - mark-urls launch-on-click by jepler.
166 - removed "small" resource parsing function, as it wasn't really
167 compatible, and not really small either.
168 - removed PATH_ENV and PATH file search support.
169 - removed support for locale-specific app-defaults file.
170 - fixed a bug where out-of-bounds colour sequences could lead
171 to crashes.
172 - limit colour changing to the standard 88 palette instead of all
173 colours.
174 - XTerm_Color01 sequence returned wrong results in query mode.
175 - iom.C now checks against destructed io_manager when unregistering.
176
1776.3 Wed Jan 4 22:37:10 CET 2006
178 - SECURITY FIX: on systems using openpty, permissions were
179 not correctly updated on the tty device and were left as
180 world-readable and world-writable (likely in original rxvt,
181 too), and were not restored properly. Affected are only
182 systems where non-unix ptys were used (such as most BSDs, not
183 GNU/Linux). (found, patched and debugged by Ryan Beasley).
184 - meta8 support was forcefully enabled in most configurations.
185 restored configurability of this (useless) feature (reported
186 by Mikachu).
187 - optionally embed a perl interpreter, which can be used for more
188 intelligent/customized selection support, visual feedback,
189 menus, tabs etc. See the the urxvtperl manpage, the -pe option,
190 perl*-resources and keysym resources. Not everything is there yet.
191 - try to be more clever about differing font sizes and their ascent.
192 Not guarenteed to work, but works better in most cases now.
193 - fix directory permissions on install.
194 - implemented option to disable built-in line drawing characters
195 and fall back to the font ones (patch by Martin Pohlack).
196 - disabled sched_yield support: the linux version is just too useless
197 (it schedules nice'd processes before the own one for extended
198 periods). Too bad, it could reduce system time by a factor of 5 here.
199
2006.2 Mon Jan 2 16:03:01 CET 2006
201 - implemented intensityStyles option which enables/disables bold/blink
202 selecting high intensity foreground/background colours, suggested by
203 Chuck Blake.
204 - move iso14755 character feedback box out of the way if it would
205 obscure the mouse cursor position.
206 - replaced callback.h by a fixed version from gvpe that correctly
207 returns the callback result (affects new -pty-fd semantics in urxvtc
208 on a few architectures). Reported by darix.
209 - include one trailing space in rectangular selections to indicate
210 the inserted newline (yeah, weird, but visually more pleasing).
211 - try to use sched_yield to (drastically) improve terminal data
212 transfer efficiency.
213 - further minor cleanups.
214
2156.1 Tue Dec 27 13:23:40 CET 2005
216 - update iso8859-7 table (euro and drachma round-trip et al.).
217 - fix a crash when the selection scrolls out of the scrollback
218 while the user still drags.
219 - selections that were partially scrolled out of the window were
220 not drawn correctly.
221 - lines newly scrolled in were not initialized properly, leading
222 to extremely long lines and (hopefully) some segfaults.
223 - iso14755 overlay position was wrong.
224 - iso14755 overlay now displays rendition info, too.
225 - use unicode white space class instead of hardcoded values for
226 stripping whitespace.
227 - do whitespace stripping on rectangular selections.
228 - slight cleanups in src/features.h.
229
2306.0 Sat Dec 24 13:58:56 CET 2005
231 - make it compile without SMART_RESIZE again.
232 - enable slow link support by default.
233 - fix relative cursor-positioning not respecting scrolling regions
234 (also a bug in original rxvt).
235 - initialize termios structure to zero when fetching it fails
236 (see http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=84647 for a
237 partial patch).
238 - bump max columns/rows to 10000 each.
239 - bump max savelines to 10000000.
240 - -pty-fd now passes the urxvtc fd to the urxvtd process.
241 - avoid linking against -lnsl/-lsocket/-lxpg4 unless neccessary.
242 - major code cleanup (still not complete, though).
243 - implement -hold option.
244 - _major_ rewrite of internal buffer handling:
245 - re-flow on resize, lines get wrapped instead of winged.
246 - circular line buffer (substantially speeds up scrolling).
247 - slightly less code + data memory usage per terminal.
248 - slight overall speed improvements.
249 - considerably improved code clarity.
250 - partial-screen scrolls no longer end up in the scrollback
251 buffer.
252
2535.9 Sat Dec 17 21:53:17 CET 2005
254 - fix a bug in the menu code of unknown impact, found by darix.
255 - clean up signal handling to be global, not per terminal
256 (matters only for rxvtd).
257 - fix small typoe in rxvt.1 (found by Mike Fabian).
258 - don't crash when broken xft/fontconfig/freetype versions return
259 bogus data, ignore the xft font instead (experienced on suse).
260
2615.8 Tue Oct 25 22:21:45 CEST 2005
262 - INCOMPATIBLE CHANGE: many configure options are now on by default.
263 If you want the old behaviour, try:
264 configure --disable-everything <your enable options>
265 - INCOMPATIBLE CHANGE: -fade changed it's meaning to comply with
266 the documentation and common sense: when upgrading, replace your
267 percentage by 100-percentage.
268 - integrated "fade to specific colour" patch by Martin Parm.
269 - slow down the internal visual bell (delay by 20ms) and update
270 the terminfo flash code to use the same delay. This is
271 synchronous, so many bells might inhibit screen updates in other
272 windows.
273 - text with background==foreground colour gets displayed with default
274 bg/fg now when in reverse video, so it can be seen when selecting.
275 - allow koi8r* as x11 encoding name for koi8r (Nikita Danilov).
276 - removed undocumented inheritPixmapforce option.
277 - replaced INSTALL file.
278
2795.7 Wed Jul 13 04:46:33 CEST 2005
280 - implement some useful (hopefully) options for rxvtd.
281 - separate and improved rxvtc(1) and rxvtd(1) manpages.
282 - fix a bug that caused segfaults on startup on systems that do
283 not support local unix connections, e.g cygwin. (btw, I didn't
284 even know about the -rootless and -multiwindow Cygwin/X modes).
285 - large amounts of text without control sequences or newlines
286 could almost freeze output. This has been fixed by adding extra
287 refreshes in these cases (also a problem in original rxvt).
288
2895.6 Sun Jun 26 22:11:13 CEST 2005
290 - R_SB_RXVT bitset value was 0, so rxvt scrollbar was initialised
291 every time resulting in display errors (original rxvt also affected).
292 Reported by Jasmin Buchert.
293 - font names are now considered to be utf-8 encoded (xft apperently
294 uses this convention. X Core fonts might not, but it should be rare).
295 Affects display in iso14755 box.
296 - rewrote the low-level xft drawing function ("xft backend" for the
297 hipper parts of the world) to hopefully cope better with proportional
298 chars mixed with fixed-width ones.
299 - rxvt is now much more careful (read: slower) with potentially
300 overlapping xft characters. It usually overshoots and redraws
301 more than required, but that's better than undershooting and
302 cutting pieces off of characters.
303 - rxvt is now more restrictive in what font heights it accepts for
304 fonts that will likely overshoot or undershoot lines.
305 - fix a cosmetic problem with the unfocused cursor on a wide character
306 at the end of the line (reported by Mikachu).
307 - wide characters not fitting into the end of the line will be
308 output in the next line (reported by Mikachu).
309 - added doc/solaris9.patch by Ewgenij Starostin.
310
3115.5 Sat Apr 23 22:31:36 CEST 2005
312 - re-enabled modifer state matching as in 5.3, but implement
313 a new builtin: keysym style that simply reverts to the built-in
314 meaning of the given key.
315 - use scrollcolor for next scrollbar instead of hardcoded antiquewhite
316 (patch by Martin Edlman).
317
3185.4 Mon Apr 18 00:33:31 CEST 2005
319 - match modifier state exactly in custom keyboard code.
320 this is necessary because it has no knowledge about
321 built-in mappings and so will overwrite them. the priority-code
322 will be re-enabled when this has changed, so watch out.
323 - cursor blinking now depends on frills.
324 - underline cursor mode (frills, -uc).
325 - implement special value (*g*) for pointerBlankDelay
326 to disable it.
327
3285.3 Sun Mar 13 00:20:44 CET 2005
329 - fix a bug that allowed to overflow a buffer via a long
330 escape sequence, which is probably exploitable (fix by
331 Rob Holland / Yoann Vandoorselaere / Gentoo Audit Team).
332 - Custom key mappings no longer confuse mouse buttons
333 with modifiers.
334 - use XmbSetWMProperties instead of XSetWMProperties.
335 - properly update WM_LOCALE.
336 - implement _NET_WM_PING protocol.
337 - implemented escape sequences to move the scrollback buffer view
338 and clear the scrollback buffer.
339
3405.2 Sun Feb 20 01:48:59 CET 2005
341 - new option -pty-fd that makes the terminal a slave
342 that uses an existing pty for I/O instead of starting
343 a command.
344 - implement enough of XEMBED to allow for correct focus.
345 - added doc/embed-tk, an embedding example in Perl/Tk,
346 and doc/rxvt-tabbed, a primitive tabbed shell implemented
347 in Perl/Gtk2.
348 - fix assertion failure ("crash") on mousewheel-scrolling
349 when the terminal height is small, by removing the assert.
350 (reported by Mikael Magnusson).
351 - SYNCCVS. backported bugfixes done to rxvt
352 (sourceforge bugs #1028739, #1028732), except for
353 pts/%s fix as it seems to collide with freebsd,
354 and sourceforge bug #954654, which is not neccessary.
355 - change terminfo file to not clobber G1 when using
356 line-drawing characters, as this seems to mess
357 with EUC-JP (it will clobber G0, but G0 practically
358 needs to be US-ASCII all the time).
359 - toggle default application keypad/cursor mode to help
360 some apps who fail to set the correct mode.
361 - check for WM_PROTOCOLS type in ClientMessage as to
362 not destroy the window for other types of messages.
363 - remove shared library (or any library) support - it is
364 of no use currently (and -embed is a better way to embed
365 rxvt-unicode).
366 - get rid of the intpro files.
367
3685.1 Tue Feb 15 17:13:27 CET 2005
369 - fix a bug when parsing fontnames and another one
370 for empty keymaps which could result in crashes
371 (Kuang-che Wu).
372 - new option: -embed (frills). somebody could write a simple
373 tk script to make a tab'able terminal now...
374 - only warn on X errors and _try_ to continue (frills).
375 - add COPYING back, which got lost somehow.
376 - after deciding that LSM is dead, remove all traces of it,
377 along with other, similar, cleanups.
378 - _try_ to react sensibly to some non-monotonic time changes.
379 - don't crash in urxvtc when getcwd fails (reported by Paco-Paco).
380 - tweak font searching algorithm a bit to be faster and more
381 compatible with older rxvt-unicode versions when multiple fonts
382 match (reported by Paco-Paco).
383 - urxvtd tries to stay in "/" whenever possible.
384
3855.0 Fri Feb 11 18:31:48 CET 2005
386 - document a race-free hack to start urxvtd.
387 - document all(?) environment variables used and set by rxvt.
388 - bring xgetdefault-style resource file ordering more in line with
389 Xt, and document it in rxvt(1).
390 - correctly use screen-dependent resources when --enable-xgetdefault,
391 and also fix some memory bugs (thanks to Thierry Reding for
392 his patience and time in tracking this down).
393 - bring own resource parsing more in line with X resource parsing,
394 most notably, don't remove double quotes.
395 - compile fix for freebsd (no ut_id) (Thierry Thomas).
396 - clean up utmp and pty on X I/O errors and signals (idea
397 by Joël Riou).
398 - "un"document -xrm, it never really worked, was only
399 available with --enable-xgetdefault, is not necessary
400 and is surprisingly hard to implement.
401 - shaved off some code segment size.
402 - various code cleanups.
403 - more keysym-mapping fixes.
404
4054.9 Thu Feb 3 09:52:03 CET 2005
406 - nuke out utmp entries completely. Should be fixed in
407 original rxvt, too. (reported by James Michael Fultz).
408 - resizes wil now correctly refresh the displayed text when
409 -pixmap is active.
410 - new option/resource imFont.
411 - document --tripleclickwords/-tcw.
412 - select logical instead of physical lines when doing a triple-click.
413 - reordered help listing to group similar options together.
414 - handle SIGINT the same way as SIGTERM (reported by Joël Riou).
415 - fix a bug introduced while applying the keyboard patch
416 (WU Fengguang).
417 - document all window-op sequences (rxvt.7.) and more keysym
418 examples (rxvt.1).
419 - removed src/test completely.
420 - renamed keysym 'proto:'-prefix to 'command:'.
421
4224.8 Tue Jan 18 02:23:57 CET 2005
423 - added a patch by WU Fengguang that makes the keyboard
424 highly configurable (e.g. locale changes, custom escape
425 sequences, and more). See keysym resource in rxvt(1).
426 - remove default key sequence for unknown keys again, as this
427 can be achieved by customizing the keyboard now.
428 - fix some freeing problems when destroying the rxvt_display,
429 resulting in segfaults.
430 - don't crash when the saved cursor position doesn't fit on the
431 screen (wrong assert in original rxvt, reported by ikaro).
432 - fix signed/unsigned bugs on wc<->mb conversions.
433 - reset slipwheel scrolling speed when reaching the top or bottom
434 (Mikael Magnusson).
435 - for core fonts, use ascent + descent when a font is loaded,
436 and PIXEL_SIZE when not. when loading a font, iterate until a
437 font has been found that _really_ fits the height (reported and
438 tested by Olivier Wittenberg).
439 - set IUTF8 input flag, when defined (linux-2.6.5+).
440 - only define _XOPEN_SOURCE on solaris.
441 - autogenerate src/* dependency list.
442 - fixed linespace option, which ought to work now (and is dependent
443 on frills, not on it's own configure option).
444 - include pty.h, if available (cygwin).
445 - removed W11 directory from dist, it wasn't used anyway.
446 - initialize the locale much earlier.
447 - fixed two tiny per-instance memory leaks.
448
4494.7 Wed Dec 29 20:54:24 CET 2004
450 - fix a bug in the event logic that could cause the temrinal to be
451 black on initial startup.
452 - do NOT call XCloseIM, ever. This causes way to many crashes due to
453 races in the protocol and within Xlib.
454 - map iso-left-tab to the same sequence as shift-tab.
455 - generate a unique escape sequence for many unknown keys, such as
456 additional multimedia keys.
457 - mask out high (non-unicode) bits on wide characters, to cope with
458 implementations that store tag info in the high bits.
459
4604.6 Thu Dec 16 07:54:23 CET 2004
461 - try very hard not to exhaust the kernel tty buffers, even
462 if it slows down large pastes and is only cosmetic.
463 - streamline atom and xft color allocation to reduce startup
464 time (12.8s -> 7.8s on my dsl). Still, doing it with only 2-3
465 turnarounds would be much faster, but impossible to implement(?).
466 - implement underlineColor resource when ENABLE_FRILLS.
467 - iom left it's signal pipe handle open in the child
468 process. Fortunately not security-relevant as the pipe data gets
469 ignored.
470 - do not use XSETROOTPMAP_ID anymore, support ESETROOT_PMAP_ID
471 instead.
472 - fix a crash in rxvtd when the last window was being closed
473 (reported by hednod).
474 - fix an unlikely memory leak.
475 - fix atom name enumeration.
476
4774.5 Mon Dec 13 07:47:16 CET 2004
478 - fix an extremely nasty bug in utf8-conversion. upgrade is advised.
479 - completely re-wrote selection pasting. This should fix garbled
480 incomplete characters at 32k boundaries and too-short INCR
481 selections, and more. Increases memory requirements considerably
482 for large selections, but that seems unavoidable.
483
4844.4 Sun Dec 12 22:10:06 CET 2004
485 - rewrote handling of default-char width.
486 - implement _NET_WM_NAME et al., and also use UTF8_STRING
487 for the xterm property esc. sequence. Allows i18n window
488 titles etc.
489 - SMART_WINDOW_TITLE removed, pls. complain if you need this.
490 - added GBK encoding (formidable patch by WU Fengguang).
491 - fixed a bug in the transparency code.
492 - upgraded iom.[Ch].
493 - force slower (but more responsive) transparency update.
494 - fix off-by-one bug with wide characters at the end of a line,
495 which got partially overwritten by spaces.
496 - as xlib is completely broken with respect to utf-8 handling
497 and nobody is going to fix it, that part has been re-implemented.
498 should fix most paste problems between apps that use UTF8 encoding
499 and rxvt running in a lesser-supported locale (thanks to Robin Redeker
500 for writing utf8towcs). Only enabled with ENABLE_FRILLS.
501 - darwin compile fix by Ethan Blanton.
502 - fix the colour of the underline, which was rather random before.
503
5044.3 Sat Dec 4 04:58:37 CET 2004
505 - unapply the "emulated graphical chars. respect wcwidth" patch.
506 obviously in locales not having these characters they should
507 still have a width. Solve it correctly by not relying on wcwidth.
508 Note to self: do not ever apply patches without checking them
509 thoroughly.
510 - updated .spec file, it's included in the release tarball
511 now, too.
512
5134.2 Wed Dec 1 03:30:22 CET 2004
514 - make emulated graphical characters respect wcwidth (Kuang-che Wu).
515 - remove debugging code that caused major slowdowns
516 on high-latency networks.
517 - wide characters shift the correct number of characters
518 in insert mode now. Reported by Gunnar Ritter.
519 - doc/rxvt-unicode.spec file contributed by Ville Herva.
520 - make storage of tab movements as characters optional
521 on the -ptab option and pastableTabs: resource. On request
522 by Gunnar Ritter.
523 - fix a bug where :size= argument for xft fonts was ignored
524 or used incorrectly. Reported by Ville Herva.
525
5264.1 Sun Nov 21 21:10:19 CET 2004
527 - save and restore cursor position in secondary screen regardless of
528 -ssc/-ssr settings.
529 - fix some 64-bit bugs that lead to crashes with certain other
530 programs like vncviewer (original rxvt also affected).
531 - added doc/podtbl to the dist tarball.
532 - add compile fix for darwin.
533 - configure fix for transparency without tinting.
534 - changed CN to ZH _really_ everywhere.
535 - upgraded iom.[Ch].
536
5374.0 Mon Sep 13 01:10:26 CEST 2004
538 - turn off autohinting for some badly-hinted fallback fonts.
539 - mnaapge tpyo crorcetoins by Bastian Kleineidam.
540 - implemented rectangular selections (button+meta), experimental.
541 - implement race-free signal handling in iom.C.
542 - use iom.C signal handling to avoid races in signal handling.
543 - use default action on SIGINT and SIGQUIT, instead of terminating.
544 - "the return of the 100 times per second refresh bug".
545 ... terminated by a fix.
546 - new supported preeeditType "None".
547 - added FAQ about possible compose key problems.
548 - changed CN to ZH everywhere (sorry for the confusion).
549 - move XFilterEvent up, as some input method seem to want events
550 for windows not requesting XIM. Please report if this change
551 causes any harm (specially with pointerblanking)
552 (patch by Kuang-che Wu).
553 - send the input method spot position on every refresh, not just
554 when rxvt thinks it should (which was not often enough...).
555 - fix double-wide combining characters (it might look a bit ugly,
556 though, but common cases are handled by normalization anyways).
557 - moved FAQ to rxvt(7), also made a copy into README.FAQ.
558 - fix a bug(?) in the XIM destroy callback.
559 - be more conservative when trying to register new input methods,
560 as Xlib races might make rxvt crash. When two or more
561 input methods are active, killing one probably still crashes rxvt
562 due to that bug :( Thanks a lot to Kuang-che Wu for immense help
563 in tracking this down.
564 - manpages (but not .txt and .html versions) will be patched (during
565 make install) with the correct program name and other info.
566
5673.9 Wed Aug 25 19:24:04 CEST 2004
568 - the change to unsigned int from unsigned short broke
569 many signed comparisons, resulting in failed assertions.
570
5713.8 Wed Aug 25 05:46:56 CEST 2004
572 - WARNING: TERM=rxvt-unicode is now *default* unless compiled
573 differently. A terminfo entry will automatically be compiled and
574 installed if tic is available.
575 - fixed some --disable switches that didn't work.
576 - tweaked src/features.h a bit.
577 - removed README.unicode.
578 - support select&paste of tab characters.
579 - fixed a segfault when trying to load nonexistant fonts (reported
580 by Eduard Bloch and Mikael Magnusson).
581 - fixed a long-standing rxvt bug in which rxvt failed to save
582 and restore the correct cursor position on the secondary screen.
583 - reworked rxvt-unicode terminfo to allow more efficient and less flickering
584 screen updates with curses.
585 - wide characters that are being halfway overwritten are now replaced
586 by spaces.
587 - urxvtc now transmits urxvt as default name, not urxvtc anymore
588 (likewise for other names chosen at configure time).
589 - disabled the automatic font lookup for unknown characters. xft
590 is just too slow for this to work.
591 - changed realbold code, implemented _real_ bold and italic support,
592 where _real_ means the symbiosis of what I want with what I can
593 implement. use --enable-styles.
594 - removed 256 color mode, but enable 88 colours in all modes
595 (88 to be compatible with 88 colour xterm which is widely
596 supported, and most programs assume a non-iso colourtable
597 for terminals with "odd" number of colours).
598 - added doc/etc/rxvt-unicode.terminfo which is a big overhaul
599 compared to the old rxvt terminfo.
600 - sped up xft rendering by 30% *iff* the font allows it (i.e. is
601 monospaced "enough") *and* matches the base font in width.
602 - implement positive and negative character-font caching, which
603 speeds up output immensely in case a character cannot be found
604 (only for non-bold right now).
605 - fix segfault in fading code on certain escape sequences.
606 - better default font size and style.
607 - rxvt-unicode is now much more picky about fonts not fitting
608 into the base font, but to offset this it will check each
609 single character against the base font extents and will only
610 use the characters fitting into the bounding box (+ some fudge).
611 - characters not fitting into the base boundary box will now often
612 be used anyways, but the following characters will be redrawn
613 more often to avoid pixel-droppings. This is like the original
614 rxvt pixel-dropping pass but it's much faster.
615 - scrollColor now affects plain scrollbar (Mikael Magnusson).
616 - fixed segfault in overlay code when height was larger than the
617 screen height.
618 - cursor no longer shines "through" the overlay.
619 - 7-bit ST marker detection was broken.
620 - scrollbar didn't come back sometimes when switching it
621 off/on using escape sequences (Mikael Magnusson).
622 - fix lots of colour problems with focus fading.
623 - $COLORFGBG was not set as documented.
624 - fix iso 14755 5.1 support when --enable-frills but --disable-iso14755.
625 - removed OSC 702.
626 - disabled MOUSE_REPORT_DOUBLECLICK by default, as programs seem to be
627 confused by it rather than using it.
628
6293.7 Tue Aug 17 04:22:25 CEST 2004
630 - new configure option --enable-iso14755.
631 - full iso 14755 conformance (at least I claim so :).
632 - extended the FAQ section in the manpage.
633 - fix OverTheSpot and OffTheSpot editing, which was broken since ages,
634 due to no fontset being available. The fontset used is a very rough
635 approximation to the rxvt font, though. This fixes the
636 "cannot create input context" in most cases.
637 - fix coordinates used for Over && OffTheSpot editing to fit directly
638 at the cursor (Over) or into the top line (Off).
639 - reset SIGHUP and SIGPIPE handlers to default values (they were
640 previously being ignored, causing programs not to exit on windoe
641 close).
642 - implemented simple overlays for feedback messages. believe it or
643 not, this was a major blocker in implementing tabbed terminals.
644 - fix compiling with --disable-frills (Adam Sampson).
645 - clarify bold docs in README.unicode (Adam Sampson).
646 - fix crash on window close when the input method or context
647 could not be created.
648 - add work around for badly written programs (see debian bug
649 #202497). This is _not_ a bug in rxvt but rather a race
650 condition in other programs (e.g. jed). It works by forcefully
651 sending SIGWINCH when rxvt sees the first output from the
652 command. This workaround isn't perfect (a slight cost to
653 wellbehaving programs who need to resize twice), but it usually
654 works.
655 - set correct pixel size in struct winsize.
656 - document more escape sequences.
657 - fix leftover macros and a few minor doc glitches in rxvt(1).
658 - work around bash's assumption that stepping into the middle of a
659 character is a sensible operation.
660 - fix some corner cases in autowrap handling.
661 - remove various useless make cruft, renamed files to better
662 reflect on their function, renamed many variables.
663 - fixed printscreen functionality, as noted by Jinesh Choksi.
664 - fix a problem where redraws of double-width characters sometimes
665 made the last character draw with normal width (especially visible
666 with selections).
667
6683.6 Sat Aug 14 04:55:26 CEST 2004
669 - SECURITY FIX: rxvtd kept open filehandles to other terminal
670 windows when spawning children. Actual risk is low (attacker
671 needs access to a local shell window).
672 - implemented parts 5.1 and 5.2 of ISO 14755 (i.e. hold down
673 Ctrl+Shift and enter hex numbers. space commits it as a unicode
674 character, or press and release Crl+Shift and then enter a
675 function key to get it's picture). patches for 5.3 (or 5.4 with
676 a little window or so) would be welcome.
677 - fixed large pastes (INCR selections, debian bug #191456).
678 - fixed longstanding bug in which rxvtd crashed when
679 a message was logged after startup (a rare case).
680 - got rid of yodl completely by converting to pod.
681 - integrated the FAQ into the manpage. In the future, more will be
682 added there.
683 - reference documentation is now installed as rxvt(7).
684 - rxvt(7) now contains README.configure, which is autogenerated.
685 - fix memory leak in insecure mode on certain display echos.
686 - report sequences now report empty strings in secure mode
687 instead of being ignored.
688 - enable some report sequences even in secure mode, such as colour
689 queries, as they are harmless(tm).
690 - rxvt-unicode will now try to find a matching xft font if it can't
691 find a matching font from the fallback list. It might look ugly,
692 but if a xft font with our character exists, rxvt will find it.
693 - moved FreeMono to the very back of the fallback list, as some
694 people complain it looks ugly. This is a no-win situation, though.
695 - fixed sourceforge bug 998970, reported against aterm:
696 "crash on -sl 0 on super small windows".
697 - decreased memory and code size when !--enable-transparency.
698 - SYNCCVS. backported changes done to rxvt, except for Color_ufbg,
699 which I think is better done through fading, and libW11, which
700 needs testing anyways.
701 - more complete compile options help output.
702 - Provide linear scaled colour cubes for 256 colour mode.
703 Pass them through as rgbi rather than rgb so that Xlib can
704 provide gamma (from per visual intensity lists) rather than
705 providing constant gamma ourselves. Noticed by and ideas from
706 Christopher Casey <realchriscasey@hotmail.com>
707 - minor doc fix.
708
7093.5 Wed Aug 11 00:31:34 CEST 2004
710 - UPGRADE ADVISED: rxvt did wake up 100 times per second. did not
711 show in my top (linux...), but it's extremely annoying that I
712 released it with that bug. :( Fixed.
713 - use memove instead of for-loop for large scrollback buffer copies.
714 speeds up large scrollback buffers (on systems with reasonable
715 memmove :)
716 - minor cleanups.
717 - removed ~ from default cutchars, in accordance with the manpage
718 (debian bug #169415).
719 - fix a race condition on exit (debian bug #197265).
720 - change prio/next scrolling modifier handling (debian bug #226386).
721 - updated configure script to current autoconf standards.
722 - updated config.guess.
723
7243.4 Fri Aug 6 19:34:29 CEST 2004
725 - fix inheritpixmap transparency border code.
726 - fix tinting transparency border code, also experimentally
727 make some scrollbars transparent (e.g. plain, my favourite style :).
728 - imported aterm shading code (faster and still portable).
729 - changed interpretation and usage of shading (-sh).
730 - fixed blinking underlined and negative text.
731 - disable slow link support on connections using unix domain sockets,
732 speeding up scrolling immensely.
733 - various other optimizations.
734 - new borderLess switch (ewmh-compliant), by Mikael Magnusson.
735
7363.3 Sat Jul 31 15:15:59 CEST 2004
737 - some doc updates (Eduard Bloch).
738 - use faster inheritpixmap method when tinting color not set.
739 - fix pixmap offset when tinting (reported by Eduard Bloch).
740 - new -sh option by Mikael Magnusson.
741 - off-focus-fading (--enable-fading) support (patch by
742 Mikael Magnusson).
743 - cursor now set correctly on --disable-blank (reported by
744 Mikael Magnusson).
745 - better (and non-crashing) slipwheeling (Mikael Magnusson).
746 - solaris 2.8 portability changes (reported by Colin Marquardt).
747 - disable-xim now really disables xim code.
748
7493.2 Mon Jul 26 19:57:32 CEST 2004
750 - support real bold fonts (patch by Adam Sampson <azz@us-lot.org>),
751 if specified in the font list (and enabled by -rb).
752 - fixed --enable-keepscrolling and --enable-selectionscrolling, which
753 was broken since 1.8. Patch by Hans de Goede <j.w.r.degoede@hhs.nl>.
754 - fixed --enable-slipwheeling, see above.
755 - sequences ended by ST can now contain any octet by quoting it
756 with ^V (SYN).
757 - 8-bit-controls disabled by default (compiletime option).
758
7593.1 Sat Jun 26 23:38:07 CEST 2004
760 - set default backspace sequence to "DEC" (which defaults to \177)
761 as opposed to \010 as before, which was incorrect (ahem :).
762 - updated doc/etc/rxvt.* to reflect the change. This brings rxvt
763 in line with many existing rxvt terminfo and termcap entries as
764 well as with other terminal emulators.
765 - fix a segfault when trying to set a nonexistant locale
766 (reported by elmex).
767 - find more fonts by default for japanese.
768 - the internal border wasn't always cleared. This is fixed by moving
769 the window relative to it's frame and simplifies a lot of code, too.
770 - fixed quite hard to find scrollbar colour bug, reported by Eduard
771 Bloch.
772
7733.0 Mon May 10 20:47:23 CEST 2004
774 - experimental flickerfree resize mode (I tried to get even
775 less flickering with SouthWestGravity but couldn't get it to work,
776 sorry).
777 - c++-ify (or at least make it compile with g++-3.4, which should
778 make it a little bit more correct c++).
779
7802.9 Sat May 8 19:13:41 CEST 2004
781 - fix some minor doc issues + some generated doc files are now
782 getting distributed (closes debian bug #246035).
783 - minor i18n issue fixes.
784
7852.8 Thu Apr 8 22:44:36 CEST 2004
786 - replace PF_LOCAL by PF_UNIX (portability).
787 - try to detect -lnsl and -lsocket (portability).
788 - fix some minor bugs.
789
7902.7 Mon Apr 5 02:11:15 CEST 2004
791 - this version should now work fine with TERM=xterm, except
792 for the keymappings.
793 - don't leave the X or rxvtd sockets open in child processes.
794 (inherited fd's stay open - different to rxvt).
795 - xterm-compat: implemented OSC3, set/get window property. get is
796 an extension and is slightly ugly.
797 - removed --disable-swapscreen and SCROLL_ON_NO_SECONDARY and
798 replaced them by runtime-configurable options secondaryScreen and
799 secondaryScroll (-ssr and -ssc) (see debian bug #237673).
800 - close down terminal window when child exits. (debian bug #241267).
801 - xterm-compat: enable seperate mouse bg colour setting.
802 - re-enable mouse cursor colours again, fixing colours when fg/bg are
803 overwritten (as is common).
804 - xterm-compat: correctly implement privmodes 1047, 1048, 1049.
805 - ported to solaris by elmar@math.uni-bremen.de.
806
8072.6 Fri Apr 2 03:24:10 CEST 2004
808 - minor doc corrections.
809 - WARNING: changed menu sequence from ESC ] 10 to ESC ] 703 to
810 avoid clashes with xterm.
811 - changed OSC701/OSC702 sequence to return standard escaped reports.
812 - xterm-compat: make set window colour and other requests report
813 window colour when arg is "?".
814 - enable colour tinting of "transparent" backgrounds.
815 - stop ST sequences earlier, as we now react on 0x90 and thus
816 cause conditions more often that look like locks but are, in
817 fact, just rxvt waiting for a ST/BEL etc.
818 - re-enabled most of the "dangerous" echo escapes, but only
819 when -insecure is specified as option or resource (see reference).
820 (FRILLS).
821 - disables sleep(1) on transparency updates on default.
822 - fixes to make it compile better on solaris 2.9 (at least).
823 asprintf replacement is still missing(!).
824 - set _NET_WM_PID.
825
8262.5 Sun Mar 28 04:05:51 CEST 2004
827 - the usual sprinkled little code cleanups.
828 - support more 8-bit controls.
829 - more informative error messages.
830 - fix some minor memleaks and possible memory corruptions.
831 - the use of exception handling allowed the following improvements:
832 - no longer block when waiting for completion of escape sequences
833 (e.g. printf '\e';sleep 3;printf 'c' will no longer block).
834 - rxvtc usage errors should no longer kill rxvtd (debian bug #237510).
835
8362.4 Tue Mar 16 07:06:51 CET 2004
837 - fix stupid double-free() bug on exit.
838 - implement xterm private mode 1049.
839 - fix manpages (debian bug #236824).
840 - removed old selection style completely.
841 - selection works _better_ for non-8-bit and double-width chars.
842 - remove native->unicode translation tables. they aren't used anymore.
843 reduces binary and distro size a bit.
844 - add string representation for JIS X 0213:2000 so these fonts can
845 be used from within rxvt.
846 - less buggy complete set of line-drawing-characters (0x2500-0x259f).
